US President Donald Trump's latest initiative to end Russia's war against Ukraine has come to nothing. The visit of his special representatives to Moscow demonstrated that the Kremlin intends to continue the war. Bloomberg newspaper writes about this . Kyiv's allies believe the war will drag on into 2027. Moreover, they are certain that Moscow will intensify its attacks on Ukraine this coming winter, attempting to break the country and the resolve of its allies. "According to sources who wished to remain anonymous, Witkoff and Kushner made no significant progress in the talks in Moscow and Kyiv… Putin showed no signs of softening his position," the article says.
A few days later, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin quickly released its own version of the conversation, while the White House remains silent on the matter. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed a desire to hold a new meeting with Trump. Negotiations are ongoing. However, there is no sign of a breakthrough, despite both sides trying hard to feign optimism. Ukraine declares its readiness to halt the war along the current line of fire in order to begin negotiations and attempt a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. The Kremlin categorically refuses a ceasefire, setting unacceptable conditions—the cession of all Donbas territory. "According to a source, the Kremlin leader expects to emerge from the crisis next spring in a stronger position while simultaneously keeping the increasingly strained Russian economy afloat. Another source said serious negotiations are unlikely to take place before next year," Bloomberg notes. Meanwhile, Europe's allies are looking for an opportunity to strengthen Ukraine in the winter to thwart the aggressor's plans. Bloomberg sources believe that Putin needed Whitkoff and Kushner's visit to Moscow to boost his ratings ahead of parliamentary elections and demonstrate his strength to his own citizens. "He kept the American delegation waiting until the evening before meeting them at the Kremlin. Witkoff and Kushner were forced to spend several hours dining with Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev at an expensive restaurant in central Moscow," the publication reported. Sources believe that negotiations could resume after the parliamentary elections in Russia. However, there are serious doubts that they will be productive.
