Please note the statistics on the interception of Russian cruise missiles by Ukrainian air defense over the past three months. An authoritative blogger and columnist known by the pseudonym "Be Or" writes about this in his blog.
The winged ones are the Kh-101 from the Tu-95/Tu-160 strategic bombers, the Kalibr from the Black Sea Fleet ships, and the Iskander-K from land-based launchers (not to be confused with the ballistic Iskander-M). On June 2, 29 of 32 were shot down. On June 15, all 30 of 30 were shot down. On July 2, 40 of 42 were shot down. On July 6, 37 of 39 were shot down. On July 30, 54 of 61 were shot down. On August 20, 39 of 44 were shot down . On September 8, 31 of 32 were shot down. In total, 260 out of 280 missiles were intercepted in three months, with an efficiency of over 90%. Cruise missiles have been effectively taken out of play. Yes, even if they aren't shot down, they cause colossal damage, destroying buildings to their foundations. But the percentage of missiles shot down by Ukrainian air defenses makes them, at most, a supporting element in massive ballistic missile launches. Cruise missiles are no longer launched on their own, without combining them with ballistic missiles. Even though, as recently as the fall of 2022, launching 90-100 cruise missiles in a single salvo would have been a nightmare for Ukrainian cities and power plants. It is now officially known that the Swedish ACS 890 AWACS, announced back in 2024, has finally been operational in Ukrainian skies since March, significantly improving the detection and interception of cruise missiles. Furthermore, the number of missiles launched by Russian strategic aviation has decreased—a direct consequence of Operation Spiderweb, as well as targeted Ukrainian drone strikes on airfields home to Russian Aerospace Forces strategic bombers. This summer, two Tu-95s were critically damaged in Engels. This certainly doesn't make things any easier for Ukrainians now. Today's shelling in Kyiv left five people dead and 25 wounded.
