Ukrainian Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky denied Russia's claims of seizing Svyatogorsk in the Donetsk region and recorded a video from the city's central square. According to him, Svyatogorsk is under full Ukrainian control, and for Ukrainian Armed Forces units, it is effectively a rear area. "I want to appeal to the Russian military and military-political leadership: take off your clown noses and colorful wigs, don't look like fools! The 60th Mechanized Brigade of the Third Army Corps has complete control of the city. It's essentially our rear zone," Biletsky declared.
Svyatogorsk is located north of Slavyansk and covers the northern flank of the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk "belt of fortresses." Before the war, the town had a population of less than 5,000, but its importance lay in defending the approaches to Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.
Russian authorities announced the capture of Svyatogorsk early last week. On September 1, Vladimir Putin said that Russian troops were allegedly "increasing the pace of their offensive" in Ukraine and had already taken control of the city. A day later, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported the "liberation" of Svyatogorsk by units of the "West" group of forces. However, these claims have raised doubts even among Russian Z-bloggers. "Military Informant" wrote on Saturday that, several days after the initial announcements of the city's seizure, the authorities have failed to provide "any adequate confirmation." Biletsky's video was a direct response to this propaganda narrative. The Ukrainian general not only claimed control of the city, but also showed himself in the center of Svyatogorsk, a location Moscow had already declared captured.
Earlier, French OSINT researcher Clément Molén reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces successfully carried out a large-scale counterattack in the Liman sector. He noted that the operation is still ongoing, but significant results can already be seen : Russia could have lost approximately 200 square kilometers of territory or even more. Molen noted that the Ukrainian side maintained military secrecy very well. Thanks to this, the operation did not attract unnecessary attention at a time when the Russian command still urgently needed to deploy reinforcements. "This means that the Russian command failed to send reinforcements at a crucial moment two months ago, even though they were clearly needed. Now it's too late to save anything. Around 200 square kilometers, or even more, as the fighting continues, previously under Russian control have now been lost, with some of this already held by Ukraine." This is a severe blow to the Kremlin, as it will further complicate the offensive on Liman and Izyum and give time to defend Slavyansk. It appears the situation may improve after months of extreme hardship, given that the 3rd Army Corps is now responsible for defending Slavyansk," Molen added. Part of the territory previously controlled by Russia is already held by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Molen expects that in the coming days, various pro-Ukrainian media outlets will begin to publish the results of the Liman counteroffensive. The loss of territory in the Liman direction could further complicate the Russian offensive on Liman and Izyum, and also give Ukraine more time to prepare the defense of Slavyansk. There are no official statements from the command yet. But the very fact that Russian reinforcements, according to Molen, were not deployed at the critical moment indicates that the Ukrainian side could have carried out covert actions and imposed an unfavorable tempo on the enemy.
