Antalya is facing a major wildfire crisis, with powerful forest fires raging in Turkey’s Mediterranean coastal province and being intensified by strong winds. The latest blaze broke out Monday evening in the Aksu district before rapidly spreading toward neighboring Kepez, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency. Authorities evacuated residents from at least 254 homes, while two people were hospitalized with leg injuries and six others were treated at the scene after being affected by smoke. Footage released in the media shows an apocalyptic scene, with huge flames engulfing the area as firefighters struggle to contain the rapidly spreading fire. Thick smoke and the smell of burning have spread across parts of Antalya. A highway linking Antalya with the city of Isparta, about 130 kilometers north, was temporarily closed as flames threatened the area. More than 100 dogs were also evacuated from an animal shelter in Aksu as the fire approached. Footage showed veterinarians treating a dog suffering from the effects of smoke. The fires have also disrupted electricity supplies, affecting more than 2,000 homes in the region. At least five firefighting aircraft, 10 helicopters, 110 fire engines and around 600 personnel have been deployed to contain the blaze. Wildfires were also being fought in the nearby provinces of Adana and Mersin. The ongoing fires are raising concerns for the tourism industry, with the popular resort district of Kemer among the areas facing potential danger. Kemer is a well-known holiday destination that attracts large numbers of Russian tourists.
