A Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet of the Ukrainian Air Force shot down a Russian Banderol small cruise missile at extremely low altitude using an R-60 missile. Video of the combat operation was published by the Telegram channel " Sonyashnik ," which is affiliated with the Ukrainian military aviation. The air defense mission was carried out by the pilot of a modernized MiG-29MU1. The published footage shows the moment of interception, which is particularly notable due to the altitude and speed of the decision.
"Just a couple of seconds to decide: retreat or do everything possible to protect your loved ones?!" the channel wrote. The use of aircraft weapons at such altitudes requires the pilot to react extremely quickly and carefully. Under such conditions, the pilot operates practically at the very edge of acceptable parameters, where a mistake can result not only in a failed interception but also in the loss of the aircraft.
The publication also explains that the R-60 is a Soviet compact, short-range air-to-air guided missile. It was accepted into service in late 1973. The missile is equipped with an infrared homing head that captures the thermal radiation of enemy aircraft or helicopter engines and is designed to destroy maneuverable air targets at short ranges. At the start of the full-scale war, these missiles were considered obsolete, as the Ukrainian arsenal included the more modern R-73 missiles with superior combat capabilities. However, constant interceptions of Russian cruise missiles and kamikaze drones such as the Shahed and Geran-2 have depleted the newer missiles. As a result, the Ukrainian air force is forced to use older short-range missiles.
Media also reported that a private Ukrainian air defense group shot down a Shahed jet flying at 400 km/h for the first time.
It's worth noting that the jet-powered version of the Shahed is considered a very challenging target for air defense systems. This drone flies two to three times faster than the standard version. According to the Ministry of Defense, the Shahed was flying at 400 km/h at the time of interception. Despite this, it was successfully shot down. "19 companies are already forming private air defense groups that are strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure. They are integrated into the Air Force's unified command and control system and operate as part of the overall air defense," the Ministry of Defense explained. The military also noted that Russia is expanding its use of jet-powered drones in its attacks. Ukraine is responding by creating a multi-layered air defense system. It's worth noting that private air defense is a relative novelty for Ukraine. The first real teams began operating in March 2026. In essence, large companies are creating their own teams to intercept enemy UAVs at their own expense. The businesses protect themselves, and the state provides weapons, training, and integration into the overall network. Everything is strictly under the control of the Defense Forces; no independent initiatives a
