Nearly 9,000 Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow and the surrounding region throughout August, according to a statement by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, as reported by The Moscow Times. He stated that between 8:30 a.m. on August 1 and 8:30 a.m. on September 1, a total of 8,670 drones flew toward the Moscow region. He claimed that air defense forces intercepted the vast majority of the unmanned aerial vehicles before they reached the outer areas of the Russian capital, with 795 drones destroyed as they approached the city itself.
Sobyanin did not state how many drones managed to penetrate air defense layers around Moscow, nor did he provide information regarding casualties or damage caused by falling debris.
He published an animated video displaying flight paths representing drones launched toward Moscow along the entire Ukrainian-Russian border.
August 18 marked one of the largest drone strikes against Moscow since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
According to Sobyanin, nearly 650 drones were launched toward the city in a single night during that operation. The statement follows a warning issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to airlines and insurance companies, stating that Ukrainian drones have effectively closed off Russian airspace. While Kyiv is not threatening civil aviation, Zelenskyy said, “there will be drones in Russia’s skies and due notice must be taken” by airlines and insurance companies.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called Zelenskyy’s comments “a declaration of state terrorism”.
So, can Ukraine really shut down Russia’s airspace? And what happens if the airspace of the world’s largest country becomes inaccessible?
Ukrainian drones have increasingly threatened or disrupted air traffic at Russian airports in recent months.
As Russia has stepped up its use of ballistic missiles against Ukraine, Kyiv has struggled to intercept them due to a lack of ammunition for its air defence systems, particularly United States-made Patriot systems.
Ukraine has, instead, responded by striking Russian infrastructure, oil and port facilities, and even e-commerce warehouses, deep inside Russian territory. Unmanned drones, which Ukraine now mass-produces at low cost, have transformed the Ukraine-Russia war theatre, allowing Kyiv to take the fight hundreds of kilometres beyond the front line and increasingly into Russia’s major cities.
Analysts say that the distance they can reach is now more of a concern than the damage they can inflict as they are interfering with civilian aviation well inside Russia, including around Moscow.
As Ukraine has developed drone technology at an exponential rate since the start of the war, drones have become much longer-range.
