The US military has struck Iranian tankers for the first time in response to Tehran's attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz, informed sources told Axios. According to one of them, the new "tanker-for-tanker" approach was approved by US President Donald Trump to deter Iran from interfering with shipping in the strait. Previously, the US military had only struck ships attempting to breach Iran's naval blockade.

Two Iranian tankers were hit by drones as part of a major strike on Tuesday, September 1, that targeted approximately 100 targets. According to Axios, the attacked vessels were anchored off the Iranian coast north of the naval blockade line. Also hit were Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) air defense facilities, radar systems, launchers for anti-ship cruise missiles and attack drones, mine-laying equipment, and communications centers, the publication's sources reported.

US Central Command stated that these strikes were a response to recent attempts by the IRGC to target commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US bases in the Middle East. However, as Axios reports, the attack is part of a plan Trump and his aides have been considering in recent days to prevent Iran from regaining the capability to target ships.

One of the publication's sources noted that the destruction of military infrastructure should reduce the risk of Iranian attacks on oil tankers, naval ships, and US aircraft. As a result of the massive strike, the US military has reduced the threat to commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz "for at least a month," the Axios source emphasized. According to the source, against this backdrop, US forces escorted approximately 40 tankers carrying millions of barrels of oil through the waterway in one day. The IRGC also launched several anti-ship cruise missiles and drones at the ships, but all were shot down.

In response to the massive US attack, Iran launched ballistic missiles and attack drones at US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Iraq. The Jordanian army reported intercepting ten Iranian missiles. Bahraini and Kuwaiti authorities also reported the operation of their air defense systems.

Iranian authorities also claim that one of the American strikes hit a wedding reception in the south of the country. According to Tehran, four people, including a child, were killed, and approximately 50 others were wounded. CENTCOM stated that it "never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC."

Trump called the American attack "entirely justified" and warned that if Iran takes further action, the United States will strike at a "much higher and harsher level." He added that Washington has not yet activated its most destructive attack option, which remains "in reserve."
