All right. Good morning. We made it to Friday. It's seven o'clock. Welcome to Good Day L.A.
Look at that beautiful sunrise. Stunning sunrise on this Friday before Labor Day. Yeah. Maria,
what's it going to look like out there? Well, depends on which day of the holiday weekend.
I'm going to say beautiful, even with showers in the forecast. I call it blessings. We need it. We
need a little bit of moisture, I think. But part of your holiday weekend will be a chance for some
showers. But today, beautiful. We've got some patchy clouds, dry conditions. We've got a nice
sea breeze. The temperature's actually kind of on the cool side as you are getting up, getting
ready. It's just 61 in Pasadena and Woodland Hills. Maybe a light sweatshirt. Corona, just 55.
Big Bear, cool at 47. Palm Springs, 72 degrees currently. Our highs today will range anywhere
from 100 in Palm Springs in the low desert. So it's going to warm up. 85 in the high desert
areas with sunshine. Some breezes this afternoon for the mountains, some of the deserts and the
coast. Some of our beaches will get those breezes. 82 for downtown L.A. today. Beautiful. Just
slightly below normal. 88 in the valleys and the Inlet Empire along the coast. 75 with really nice
conditions. We do have some increasing clouds, humidity and chances for showers as we get to
the weekend. We'll talk about that and the dangerous surf when I come back. But first,
let's check in on the traffic. Stu has been over this motorcycle crash. Looks like things
are moving a little bit faster, at least, Stu. What's the latest? Hey, good morning, Maria. Good
morning, everybody. You know, Maria, I'm just, I'm really hoping for a little bit of rain on
Sunday. Just, just a rainy day would be fantastic. Talk about some traffic. Let's do that. That's
what my paycheck is for. Let's talk about that 57 southbound. We're in Fullerton and this is
going to be right before your Belinda crash out here in the carpool lane involving a motorcyclist.
If you were watching just moments ago, you'll see that the fire trucks have left California
Highway Patrol. I'm not sure what they're doing right now, but it definitely looks like they are
stopping almost all the traffic out here, maybe just allowing some of these other folks to get
out of there. But right now, that backup still huge. That's the important part. As you make
your way away from the 60 this morning on that southbound 57, expect delays. Once you pass your
Belinda, though, it opens up and is a good ride. Northbound on that 57, that's a fantastic ride
indeed. This may be cleared in just a few moments, but the recovery time, it might be a little
longer than that. Sending it back to you all in the studio. Good morning. All right, Stu, good
morning to you. Unfortunately, we do begin with a tragic story. A deadly crash is under investigation
in Wrightwood this morning. That's right. Four people were killed and two others are in critical
condition at this point. Christy Fajardo is at the scene with the details. Christy.
Yeah, good morning. A tragic start to the Labor Day weekend. Right now, the CHP has closed off
one lane here of Highway two and is guiding cars through all because of what you see
right over there. Four people were killed. Two others are in critical condition,
and the CHP says this car about 1 30 this morning veered off the highway to
hit that pole and overturned. Now, according to San Bernardino County Fire, six people were on
board. Five were ejected. The other person was wearing a seatbelt and managed to get out of the
overturned car. That person, along with another, were airlifted to the hospital in critical
condition. We're told one is a man. The other is a woman. A person in another car who was traveling
with the victims as part of a caravan witnessed the accident and called 911. The CHP says they
still don't know what caused this accident but are reminding the public that they see
too many preventable tragedies on holiday weekends. Drive safely, drive to arrive,
speed kills and always wear your seatbelt. Don't drink and drive. I mean, that's the
same message we put out every time. And to give you an idea of where we are, we're near Mountain
High on Highway two between Big Pines Highway and Wrightwood. Right now, the CHP says they're
on the medical examiner to arrive and say the four victims were two men and two women. And they
also tell us that grieving family members and friends were out here earlier, apparently waking
up to some very devastating news. Live near Wrightwood, I'm Christy Fajardo, listening back
to you. Awful. All right, Christy, thank you. Meantime, a slow speed chase came to a dramatic
end around midnight on the 10 freeway in South LA. You can see a damaged rear tire on the white
Mercedes SUV after it hit a spike strip during the chase. This all began in Paramount after the
report of a stolen vehicle came in. CHP used a pit maneuver to stop the SUV in the University Park
area. Look at this. The driver got out and was standing outside the wreck but then changed his
mind and climbed back in when officers approached. The brief standoff ended when officers moved in.
They smashed a window before finally taking the suspect into custody. All right, the holiday
weekend travel is kicking into high gear with millions of people hitting the road or heading
to the nearest airport. We have Mario live at LAX talking to some travelers out there. Good morning.
Yeah, that's right. We're with the Alvarez family right now and they're headed to
a far location. Okay, guys, tell me where you're heading this morning.
Going to Japan. Japan. Okay, it's the first time in Japan. We've got a family of one, two, three,
six here and okay, it's birthdays here. What's your name and how old are you turning here in a
couple of days? My name is Arabella Alvarez and I'm turning 10. 10 years old and your sister here,
what about you? My name is Alea and we actually share the same birthday, like the same day and
we have different year and I'm turning 15. Happy birthday on behalf of Good Day LA. You guys have
a special treat going to Japan. So, all right, give everybody at home a wave as they are off
and they have a long way to go but they're very excited. So, let's go to the video here because
we're talking about more than 17 million people that are going to be passing through
security checkpoints at airports across the country and they're traveling despite paying more
than they have in the past for these trips. AAA booking data shows domestic roundtrip airfare
averaging about $750 this Labor Day weekend, 2% more than last year and if you're flying to one
of the most popular destinations, Seattle, Denver, New York or Orlando, tickets are about 20% higher
than they were last year and we talked to travelers this morning who agree. They say yes, they're
heading out, they notice they are paying more. I'm just excited to go to the wedding, you know,
be with family and be back on Sunday. And when you paid for the ticket, did you notice that
prices were higher than normal? Very high but I paid advance way before. Pack right, we check our
stuff in to make it easier and quicker for the layovers and stuff. So, yeah, it should be fun.
Did you notice that airfare was higher this year? Yeah, yeah, yeah and that they're, you know, nickel
and diming on the bags. All right and if you're on the roads this Labor Day weekend, gas prices
are up again. AAA says the average price for gas here in the state of California about $581
and in LA and Long Beach, it's a little higher, $586, roughly a dollar and 20 cents more than this
time last year. So, AAA says you could end up spending about $18 to $24 more to fill up your
tank this holiday weekend compared to last. So, back out here live again, the airport's filling
up this morning. All right, let me talk to one more family here. You guys are headed to Chicago
this morning. I see, I see you have the cute little girls here. Tell me, how is it traveling with kids?
Stressful, but we're making it through, yeah. Any tips to keep them going on this plane, right?
Lots of snacks, lots of entertainment. And iPads. We're an iPad family, yes.
They look like they're gonna be pretty well behaved. I think so. All right, give us a wave,
guys, give us a wave. Okay, that's the latest from LAX this morning. We'll send it back to you.
I love iPad, that is a must. They have the cutest suitcases, too, that they're riding in.
Oh, my gosh, how cute. Well, good luck to all the families out there traveling. Oh, yeah,
the family going to Japan. That's very exciting. Okay, guys, safe travel. Thank you. So, we are
now less than two months from the runoff to decide who will lead Los Angeles for the next four years.
Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Nithya Raman both shared a stage last night in South LA.
Matthew Seedorf reports. How do you think it went tonight? Good, good. I enjoyed the conversation.
Quick questions for LA's mayoral candidates. How do you think tonight went? You know,
I hope that I was able to convey that, for me, our climate crisis is a focus of mine.
Both speaking separately at a South LA forum Thursday night focused on the environment.
We have an international and a national reputation for our work on environmental concerns. Los
Angeles needs to lead again on climate. Both discussing two major environmental disasters,
the Palisades Fire and Lineage Warehouse Fire. We need to be proactive, and that's something that
we have already started doing. We weren't before. We have a new fire chief. Preparation, staffing,
and ensuring that emergency response is available to go out to neighborhoods in advance of an
emergency, that is an essential part of what the city needs to be doing. Mayor Bass, on the way
to Ricard, we tried speaking with Mayor Karen Bass. The same day, a House subcommittee demanded
answers on LA's homelessness spending, asking the mayor to testify. Are you planning to testify
in a couple weeks to Congress? Talking to my lawyers about it right now. I'm not going to
under-resource the departments. Councilwoman Nithya Raman agreeing to answer our questions
in an interview, recently getting an official endorsement from the Democrat Socialist of
America. How do you respond to people that maybe have concerns about that? You know,
the DSA is a part of my big, broad, progressive coalition. Not every piece of that coalition is
going to agree with each other. I know that. The runoff now less than two months away,
with a potentially decisive block of voters still undecided. Those who previously backed
Spencer Pratt. How do you plan to reach Spencer Pratt voters? Running on my record. Sorry?
Running on my record. Spencer Pratt voters? I think people voted for Spencer Pratt
for the same reason I ran for mayor. They were frustrated with a broken Los Angeles,
and that frustration is reflected in my run, and I commit to changing that,
and I welcome everyone who voted for Pratt to vote for change in November.
All right, that was Matthew Seedorf reporting. Now, news from Washington,
the White House is trying to reframe the war with Iran ahead of the midterm elections.
In fact, Vice President J.D. Vance not calling it a war at all. Let's talk more about that with
Doug Luzader, who's live in Washington. Also, Doug, there's some new news coming in this morning
about the U.S. imposing new sanctions against Iran. Jen and Sandra, good morning. Yeah, you know,
this is a matter of trying to close off any kind of financial avenues that exist for the Iranian
regime. We've certainly seen some attacks ratchet up this week between the U.S. and Iran, but the
White House says that major combat operations are not underway. Iranian state media showing
the funeral of a four-year-old boy said to have been killed at a wedding during U.S. airstrikes.
So I'm extremely skeptical of this. Vice President J.D. Vance presiding over yesterday's White House
briefing cast doubts on the reports, but said there is an investigation underway. And despite
attacks back and forth this week, he also pushed back when reporters referred to it as a war.
I wouldn't call it a war. Right now, there is no active shooting. I recognize there have been
places where this has flared up. But those flare-ups may be contributing to public disapproval
of the war. And higher gas prices aren't helping. The White House says it could be worse. Gas,
frankly, could have been much, much higher were it not for our efforts. But I'm not going to make
a promise about when it's going to return to $3. And no timeline also for the war itself.
The U.S. military has succeeded in guiding more oil through the strait,
but we're still waiting for economic pressures to mount inside of Iran.
They haven't reached the tipping point yet. There's no evidence that Iran wants to negotiate
or capitulate. For them, war is oxygen for that hardline regime and the Strait of Hormuz
is the center of gravity. And from the administration's standpoint, negotiations
with Iran will not happen until the regime stops attacking ships in the strait. Jen and Sandra.
I will say, Doug, when Vice President J.D. Vance was saying that things could have been a lot worse
if we didn't enter into this conflict with Iran as far as gas prices go, that's little consolation
when you're seeing, I mean, you don't even want to know how much it cost me, Doug,
to fill up my tank of gas this morning. In California, it's a whole different story.
It is. Yeah, I think what he's saying is that it could have been worse if they hadn't taken
some steps to mitigate the increases since the conflict began. And the administration put out
a statement again today, kind of reiterating their belief that as soon as this conflict ends,
that the gas prices are going to return to normal, which may wind up being true. But the question is,
when is the conflict going to end? And obviously no one knows the answer to that, right?
Right. On a semi-unrelated note, Doug, do you know when Caroline Levitt's
replacement is going to happen? Because J.D. Vance is still doing these press conferences.
Yeah, I mean, if you recall, yeah, we don't, is the bottom line. But if you recall,
during her maternity leave, you know, they had that rotating cast of characters,
J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio, all kind of filling in there at the podium. So we may see that continue
for a while, but have not heard of any, you know, obviously it's kind of a parlor game around here,
but we have not heard anything concrete about who's going to replace her.
All right, we'll see. And we'll definitely hear from you first. Thank you so much, Doug.
We're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back.
Our good new story of the hour comes to us from Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Yeah, that's where a stranger saved the life of a baby through organ donation. The donor and the
baby just met for the first time. There were lots of tears. It's a story we first brought
you back in July. So the mother and the father were told a liver transplant was the only hope,
the only option for their baby Julián. On August 20th, their prayers were answered.
An anonymous donor matched with Julián. Anonymous until yesterday, that is.
Meet Ryan Keith, a woman from Hawaii. I had signed up at the end of last year,
but it's something I've wanted to do for a very long time. And then I got the call that there
was a child who needed it the day before my birthday. Beautiful, beautiful story, beautiful
moment. Ryan had no idea about Julián's story until this week, but now she's forever bonded
with him and his parents. Children's Hospital Los Angeles is the best in the nation for liver
transplants, but there is such a need for donors. So if you're inspired to look into us, we have a
link on our website. Saving lives. Beautiful story. Yeah. All right, a holiday weekend fundraiser.
Look at this for Children's Hospital Los Angeles gets underway today at Ernie Hallett Park in
Rolling Hills Estates. This is an annual horse show featuring riders of all ages and abilities
with a hometown fair atmosphere. There'll be so much to do for kids. We're talking about carnival
games, face painting, magic, animal shows, of course, all kinds of tasty food. It runs today
from 10 to 4, Saturday from 10 to 3, and Sunday from 10 to 4. All proceeds from the event will
benefit CHLA. Yeah, kids of all ages. Go check it out. All experience levels are welcome to go. I'll
be taking my Ethan there this weekend. Oh, good. If you have to pick a day, I would say Saturday
would be your better day. That's what you're thinking. Yeah. Today, the best day. And then
Sunday, you just have to be prepared. There might be some light scattered showers. I don't think
it'll be a big blanket whiteout, uh, rain out day, but just be prepared for that chance for
some scattered showers on Sunday. Looking at the Pacific. Oh, this is a rare thing. I just,
it's beautiful from space. When we're looking at 1, 2, 3, very distinct hurricanes right now.
This is very indicative of the kind of season we have. This is a, an El Nino year, a super El Nino
that is developing with very warm sea surface temperatures closer to the equator. Of course,
Lowell, we're watching, uh, because it is going to impact the Hawaiian islands, not directly.
At least that's what the models are pointing to. It should skirt just to the west of the western
most Island of Kauai and Niihau. Here at home, we've got hurricane Marie that's going to continue
to track away from the Baja Peninsula. It is entering our swell window. So it is generating
wave energy our way, and it's going to start building tomorrow into Sunday with some pretty
big waves. So be extra careful, cautious. If you are headed to the coast, we also have noticed the
green stuff here Sunday, that greater chance for some showers, widespread, uh, nothing too heavy,
but there's some isolated thunderstorms in the forecast. So if we get that, then there'll be some
heavy downpours associated with that, but it is a lesser chance. And then we'll see things kind
of break apart by Monday, Labor Day holiday, lingering, maybe a shower or two. But generally,
I think Monday is your safer bet for a barbecue outside. Uh, humidity will be increasing as well.
You'll feel it starting tomorrow. So it'll feel like the tropics and a little sticky muggy
condition will be back 80 degrees. Meanwhile, today in Inglewood, quite comfortable, actually
101 in India. So the farther you go, the hotter it will be as we look at our forecast highs for
Woodland Hills. Not bad. 88 today, warming up, getting more humid tomorrow and Sunday with that
chance for showers and then notice the temperatures kind of increased just a little bit as we get into
midweek next week. Just one more here. Inglewood 83 tomorrow with increasing clouds and humidity
and then that chance for showers on Sunday. Let's go back to stew in Sky Fox. Get another
look at our freeways down below. Stu, what's going on? Hey, good morning, Maria. Good morning,
everybody. Sky Fox traffic brought to us by my home sold, made our way into the O. C. Yes,
we did. And that's gonna be Irvine down there in the five drive now north and southbound on that
five. It is moving along very well out here in the Orange County area. You're gonna be doing
or better. That one's up to you. But as far as the five drive through Irvine,
fantastic indeed. Hot spots. We got him. We're gonna share those with you right now.
Hi, I'm Adrian with my home sold and we want to buy your house. We buy any house in any condition,
no commissions, no closing costs and no repairs. Go to my home sold dot com

Welcome back. The verdict watch for the Lindsay Clancy murder trial continues today in Plymouth,
Massachusetts. The jury's deadlocked, but we'll be back for seventh day of deliberations and
Kaylee Skyler is there with the very latest. What's going on now? Hi there, Jen and Sandra.
So the judge heard arguments this morning morning about the fourth note that the juror sent to the
judge yesterday afternoon. It indicated that there was a lone juror that was not able to
follow instructions about reasonable doubt. The judge ultimately decided not to dismiss this juror
and this morning he read additional instructions before sending them back to deliberations.
Here's the arguments in court. We have a person who under their oath stood in front of you
yesterday when you did the individual of idea and according to this information under oath
looked you in the eye and lied. The note indicates that the parties disagree
on what is reasonable doubt or what doubt is and how it should be applied
and we are in no position to judge if the 11 are right or the one is right.
So we do not know which way the jury is split, but Reddington has been suggesting it's in the
defense's favor after the jury sent that note yesterday afternoon and animated intense sidebar
followed and for the first time Reddington brought Clancy over to listen in. The judge
then spoke to each juror one by one before rereading instructions to them on reasonable
doubt. Now the prosecution has the burden to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Lindsay
Clancy knew what she was doing was wrong when she killed her children and attempted suicide in 2023.
The defense argues Clancy was over medicated suffering from postpartum psychosis and didn't
have control of her actions. So we're now on day seven of deliberations and this jury of nine
women and three men have now been deliberating for around 37 hours and it's important to remember
that the judge has issued that Tui Rodriguez charge which was the final instructions for the
jurors to try and reach a verdict. So if at some point today they come back and still say they're
deadlocked the judge could declare a mistrial. Jen and Sandra. And then in that case it would
likely go back to trial separately and then you would have to find a whole different pool of jurors
which by now I mean this this story has gained such now international attention national attention
that you're gonna you're gonna have a hard time finding a jury pool that really doesn't know much
about this case. Absolutely and it just makes you draw parallels to the Karen Reed case that
was also here in Massachusetts that blew up all over social media as well in her first trial it
was a hung jury and then the second time around a lot of people had heard about that case ultimately
she was acquitted of the most serious charges that first time but this could play out in a
couple different ways because if this case were to be retried any decisions about it would be up to
the district attorney district attorney Tim Cruz so he would have to decide if he wants to retry
this case if he wants to maybe try to work out a plea deal we'll have to see what happens. And just
to be clear Kaylee the sticking point here is that one sole juror is a holdout and the the issue is
that this juror doesn't understand what a reasonable doubt is is that is that what's going
on? Yeah so that note that was sent yesterday it was never read out loud in court but we got
comments from Kevin Reddington saying that the foreperson for the jury basically called out this
single person and then after some sidebars again they were very tense the judge ultimately decided
to read instructions about reasonable doubt and so that was yesterday afternoon and then this
morning he heard those additional arguments just about what to do with this juror because it is
towing a very fine line here it's very rare for a jury for a juror to be able
thrown out of a trial so it's been a very interesting morning and I think we're all on
our toes out here. Okay so they go back to the deliberating room and we'll have to see if they
come to some sort of decision today or if it carries into yet another week of this. Kaylee
Good morning everyone. Happy Friday. Welcome to Good DLA at 7 30. Yeah we have a nice long
Labor Day weekend in store. Last gasp of summer I guess you could say. I'm holding on to summer.
It's kind of the the marker for everybody right like summer's done after Labor Day Monday you
know you kind of. I think so it's like the mental marker. It's kind of the mental marker. Yeah exactly
and it's going to be kind of a mixed bag depending on which day you're going to
really go out there and celebrate big. Right now we're looking at a beautiful shot of Redondo Beach
a little bit of wave action maybe two to four foot sets coming in but it is going to increase
those wave heights as we get into tomorrow and Sunday along with the humidity will increase as
well as that shower chance but today beautiful conditions again those daytime highs today will
be in the 70s and 80s just slightly below the average which is to me in the perfect zone that's
what we have had all month so far we've only had three days of course yesterday we reached a high
of 83 for downtown LA so that's below the average of 84. 82 is what we're shooting for today so
really similar to yesterday that sun came up just before 6 30 and it will set later at 7 15 this
evening these are the highs we're expecting today 88 Woodland Hills 85 in Santa Clarita that's
fantastic 78 in Santa Ana 76 in Santa Monica with sunshine 73 in Big Bear to that 100 in Palm
Springs now I talked about that shower chance it's going to increase as we get to Sunday 40
here near downtown LA and around inland Orange County area then we'll see some lingering moisture
I think Monday a little pop-up shower here and there mainly in the morning hours but it's really
going to be Sunday your best bet for some rain I'll show you the rest of my forecast in just
a few moments plus your pictures and today's TV shout outs but first let's go back to Stu

workout bungee fitness combines cardio and strength training with a low impact gravity
defying twist i went to check it out of course you did from jumping jacks to squats the moves
may be similar but the feeling is totally different bungee fitness is great because
it removes 40 percent of your weight from your body some people can't do a burpee or even jumping
jacks but in the bungee you can do it and you can get a great workout at air fit bungee in
burbank strapping into a springy swingy harness adds an aerial twist to your workout in this
high energy group class it's all about engaging your core working on strength and cardio all while
defying a bit of gravity they get a great workout anyone can do it absolutely anyone any age shape
everybody has a good time the workout is relatively new here on the west coast this
studio has only been open for a year and a half but its following is growing the bungees make it
fun and being low impact makes it a good fitness option for many i find it really fulfilling that
so many people come in that think they can't exercise and they leave just smiling and happy
not only a workout but a joint friendly way to fly i am shocking my body into doing something
completely different and i feel like i'm also inspiring other women to get out of their comfort
zones and do something fun like this it's fantastic it's been an amazing journey and i
would encourage a lot of people to do it the workout that you get is so hard and then it's
like a short amount of time and you're pouring sweat before you know it so that's what i love
about it it's like a time crunch but you get a good workout in totally worth it if you want to
in burbank sandra endo fox 11 news how do you look so cute when you're working out like that
than flying right yeah that's how you get that sense and it's fun everyone's so happy and
that's what's great about it and they do adjust your bungee cord to your weight so if you need
more kind of less low impact then you can adjust it that way but uh yeah it's really fun they offer
other classes there as well at air fit bungee some pilates and zumba but right you see how fun
and happy everyone is doing that the entire time yeah love to fly yeah so it makes like it makes
the burpees the burpees you know we all know the burpees yeah i hate the burpees i know maybe makes
that a little bit less that's right strenuous on your joints right all right another option
it's good for everyone that's for sure that's for sure okay stew would you ever try bungee
bungee jumping have you ever been bungee jumping you know i haven't been bungee jumping i you know
we did the old school thing you gotta remember i am really old it's like crusty old uh we used
to do stuff like that out in the woods we tied ropes to trees on sides of hills and go swinging
out anyways anyways yes the answer is yes i'm in i am so in i want to do the bungee uh workout
for sure but it seemed to be a little gender bias but anyways come on let's talk about some traffic
this one brought to us by jacobian myers injury lawyers made our way over to the 405 we're going
to be in the beautiful city of west minsta west minsta and you know what we were looking for the
problem because look at all that backup but apparently there isn't any you're hitting the
brakes on that southbound 405 right about beach boulevard very slow and go for a good distance
out there but we didn't find any traffic accidents or any problems but it does open up
as we make your way a little bit farther south on that 405 and northbound 405

without glasses vr headsets or any other wearable technology pretty cool well you know learning to
read of course can open the door to a lifetime of opportunities and one non-profit is working
hard to expand literacy opportunities for kids in south la star harvey shares the story of a
meaningful mission i grew up right down the street for these students in south la sometimes opening a
can open an entire world reading is very important to me because if i didn't read then i wouldn't
have my imagination because i would like to read a lot of storybooks which give me a visual of a
world that don't exist at saint eloise's gonzaga school that love of reading is something educators
are working to build early i've been teaching 20 years and i can say that literacy is crucial
it's crucial to building a foundation where a child can be receptive to new knowledge
and be able to learn more about the world around them and to have an open mind and today books are
also competing for their attention i feel that as a society we have lost that connection to books
and to literacy so much content is delivered to children visually and through audio video
all kinds of you know reels and algorithms and auto plays the author of the book is myself
but in communities like this one building that foundation can come with challenges
i know reading is not top of it but we are making it top of it so that's what we have those back to
school nights so literacy nights that we have here and we welcome our parents and families
to teach them how to be those literacy partners at home one two three big smiles it's why gordon
philanthropies is working to help close that gap putting books directly into the hands of children
who need them we wanted to create opportunities for students regardless of where they lived
regardless of their economic situation to be able to learn to support what was going on
in their learning experience so that they could have better opportunities for their future since
2021 the organization has distributed more than 1 million books across california
and gordon says the mission comes down to something simple we're here to basically
give our children better opportunities and a better life than we have how do you go about doing
that you can do it any number of ways but it all basically comes back to ensuring that every child
has access to a quality education
parents here say they're already watching that investment pay off seeing your child put those
words together and just read it read it right off the page it's just amazing it's such a satisfying
feeling to see your child grow and literacy is it's important i'm dressed as a meteorologist
like the lady on tv for gonzalez that growth has always shown up in her daughter's confidence
she did a reading for mass and that was in front of the parish community the school community
and just seeing her go up there and read it in front of everyone i was so proud of her she was
so brave she was so confident and parents say building those skills at home doesn't have to
take hours as a parent i know it's hard to find that time to sit with your kids and do that one
reading but i think sacrificing 30 minutes a day at least to grab a book and read with them it makes
such a difference a difference gutierrez says goes beyond the page it's going to help them
build their confidence it's going to help them grow academically and at the end i think every
parent wants the best for their kids confidence you can hear in the students themselves i got
better at reading because reading is really fun and i've been practicing at my house i feel more
confident because of how much i've read more and it makes me feel confident to stand up and
not get the wording wrong good job you guys are so smart oh my goodness
it's a great story from star you just published author herself marie we were just talking about
how important literacy reading a book a physical book is that action because i know people well
i do i read it on my my kindle or my ipad it's not the same it's not it's really i picked up a
book for the first time in a long time yesterday there's such a difference yeah and um truly just
so i get the goosebumps when i think about how i learned and loved reading spending my days at the
library i mean that is so let's not get away from that star you're doing great i love it i love your
book so pick it up if you haven't yet okay uh good morning to you on this friday it's a long
holiday weekend for many so congrats if you have a long weekend good daily weather is brought to
you by my home sold if you are traveling heading out of town uh we do have some summer temperatures
here in chicago 89 degrees we've got a cluster of storms moving out of the great lakes heading for
oh well the east and the northeast eventually 80 in detroit today 85 in new york city look at
washington dc 92 we've got some showers in texas this is all remnants of edward whom which
made landfall a couple days ago so we've got 97 in dallas 92 in houston to that 104 in phoenix this
is a rare occurrence i just want to tell you it is beautiful to see from space when we're talking
about three hurricanes right now in the pacific we've got lowell here just south of the hawaiian
islands we've got kareena that's going to move north into cooler waters and of course we've got
hurricane marie just off the coast of baja here this is the one that we have been watching it will
impact our weather a little bit here as we move into the holiday weekend if you're headed down
to cabo parts of baja you're going to get some clouds and of course some showers first for us
as that system continues to move north tomorrow we're going to start to tap into some of this
tropical moisture we'll get some clouds we'll feel that humidity value increase it'll get a little
sticky and muggy tomorrow and then a chance for some showers so you can see some of the green
stuff here this computer model picking up just some scattered mostly light showers spotty
depending on where you are on sunday and then kind of dwindling chances as we get into labor
day monday so monday looks pretty good with a 10 to 20 chance for some light scattered very
light showers and then maybe some lingering moisture on tuesday otherwise not much in the
way of rain here's one model's totals maybe a little bit more over the higher elevations
maybe four tenths of an inch of rain otherwise less than a tenth maybe even just one one hundredth
of an inch of rain in santa cruda so not a lot of accumulation but it'll be nice to get a little
measurable rain right the danger uh along the coast if you are headed to the beach especially
saturday into sunday we're going to talk about swells getting up to uh five to eight feet some
sets getting up to ten feet stay off the rock jetties please never turn your back to the ocean
and for goodness sakes don't get in the water unless you're really really an experienced surfer
we've got strong dangerous rip currents in the water we have a high tide too nearly seven feet
between 5 7 p.m so you want to be mindful of that where you park some of those low-lying areas could
get flooded out a little bit as we get into the evening hours 75 today along the coast beautiful
with sunshine we've got 10 chance for some showers late tomorrow but i think it'll be more like
sunday will be the day uh where we can where we can get some of those sprinkles especially
out towards the mountains uh downtown la inland orange county 40 chance for some showers on sunday
and then monday much less 88 for the valleys and the inland empire with really gorgeous
conditions today 91 tomorrow with the increasing humidity 40 chance for showers on sunday the
mountain 73 and then a 50 chance for showers on sunday with that isolated thunderstorm possible
high desert 85 degrees today lots of sunshine labor day about 90 with much drier conditions
and then the cachella valley 100 degrees today 40 chance for some showers on sunday and then uh
i think monday will be very nice in the in the palm springs area with 102 but maybe a little
humid all right let's do some tv shout outs before you head out we want to wish this young man
