Welcome to Good Night LA. I'm Christine Devine.
Day one of a midweek storm widespread on and off
rain. Concern is growing tonight in Long Beach.
The city already battered by previous storms
is bracing for a historic El Nino.
Fox 11's Christy Fajardo live in Long Beach where she's
talking to impacted residents. Christy.
Yeah, Christine, those residents held a community
meeting across the street at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club
and there was a city council member
who was there who told them
and tried to reassure them that crews are working around the clock and
doing including doing the work
that you see here behind me they're actually dredging sand and
pushing it through this pipe I can actually hear
rocks moving through there and then moving the
sand all the way over there
and then pushing it out onto the beach where heavy machinery is then
being used to push it to build a buffer between the ocean
and those homes over there. And the
reason they're so concerned is not so much the rains today
and tomorrow, but about what is to
come. And the reason why is because what we've
already seen since Labor Day weekend, take a look,
you no doubt have seen the back-to-back images
of the massive waves battering the Long Beach
Peninsula, pushed here by three successive hurricanes
and tropical storms out in the
Pacific. The swells hammered away at the boardwalk
and seawall and eroded foundations, forcing
multiple homes to be red-tagged.
The city has now implemented an $11.4 million project to dredge the
nearby channel to build out the beach.
City Council Member Christina Dugan telling the crowd tonight
the goal is to widen the beach to 100 feet from 61st to 72nd place.
She says contractors are
working around the clock to do the work as fast as possible
and have special heavy equipment
that has enabled them to push back the berm in the impacted area.
But on the way into the meeting,
residents told us they want a long-term solution to
protect their homes. Who is running the show here?
And we get a lot of good sound bites that they're on it
and hope to accomplish a lot
with this program
but where is the line of command this is a lovely community everybody
knows everybody else and there's a chance as we've seen
by the damage already that it's going to be
a much smaller community and for all we know it
disappears i mean i don't mean to get dramatic but
it's it's a lot has
to happen to make us safe
that was live christy
Fajardo from Long Beach
Right now, we have this here, weather-related also.
A wild crash in Santa Clarita this afternoon
as a Tesla lost control on a wet road.
Happened on Via De Oro near Newhall Avenue during the rainstorm.
The car slammed into several parked
vehicles, knocked over a fire hydrant.
No injuries, though, reported.
And in Malibu, a look at these images
from Fox 11 photojournalist Mike Armijo.
Rain coming down steadily along PCH.
where weather's bringing up to an inch
and a half of rain to the coast through tomorrow morning.
Good night LA weather is sponsored
by the law offices of Larry H. Parker.
All right, so wet and cool, we've changed to fall once again
and the rain for the most part for
most areas today was more beneficial than it was problematic
but there have been a couple areas
spotty spots where it's been a little bit on the heavy side.
We'll get to that in a moment. Here's
a live view in Santa Monica right now
and for the most part a lot of the greater LA area not seeing
much rain at the moment, but we still have chances into tomorrow.
Let's go to radar right now. We'll
start with the big picture first,
just so you get a sense of what's happening. So we have this storm
system off the coast of California.
We're not going to see our rain end until this moves away.
So we still have rain with us through tomorrow
and even potentially a little bit in Friday morning,
but that'll be really, really minimal.
Right now, we have a couple of main waves. One is just east
of L.A., the other one pretty far west of L.A.,
moving through Santa Barbara right now. And this
red outlined area right here is a flash flood warning.
This is the only flash flood warning
we've seen so far today and that's issued
because of the potential of rain rates up to one inch per
hour in this area and if that happens there could
be things like rock slides and mud slides according
to the National Weather Service. That's where we have some
of the heavier stuff. Notice there's a
tail end of this line that's probably going
to clip through Oxnard and parts of Ventura County
but that likely doesn't reach LA County.
As we look east of LA we see a string of rain from down
towards Temecula to just east of Riverside
and moving up through some of the mountains,
the San Gabriel Mountains right now,
San Bernardino Mountains catching in on some of that
rain. And as we look a little closer,
let's say around Lake Arrowhead, we've got a little burst
of some heavier rain. That's what those yellow
and oranges are indicating. Again, at the moment
here, there's no flood advisory or flood warning,
but there is going to be an increase in the rain
intensity. So maybe just keep an eye
for possible minor flooding that may develop in that area
if the rain keeps on developing.
Flood watches in these green areas and notice locally closer
to LA. It's really just the strip
of the Santa Monica Mountains. That's a spot that could be
especially susceptible to some heavy rain if we get it there.
And so the National Weather Service
just highlighting that particular area.
But there is the potential really for some heavier downpours
really anywhere in Southern California.
Tomorrow it's going to be not as widespread of the rain,
but the areas where it does form could
be some spotty heavier downpours and thunderstorms.
Also a beach hazard statement along the coast of Ventura
and LA counties for elevated surf
and rip currents. That's through tomorrow.
All right. Futurecast now is going to show what we
expect to see happen with the rain for the next day or so.
We'll start you off tonight. Again,
you can see some areas, especially the mountains,
getting some rain at one o'clock in the morning.
For example, our model shows maybe an increase around
the San Bernardino Mountains, but a lot
of the L.A. area probably dry overnight tomorrow morning.
Not widespread rain, but I'd say let's
call it scatter. So hit and miss off and on rain of that nature.
That's a look at 10 o'clock in
the morning. Here's midday tomorrow.
So there's still, again, areas that are getting nothing.
but at the same time could be some potent downpours
with those yellow and orange colors there.
Into the afternoon, it's kind of winding down,
and I think maybe as late as Friday morning we see a little something.
So the rain coverage tomorrow is going
to be likely greatest around midday.
Notice how the coverage of the rain kind
of trails off as we go later into the day.
High temperatures tomorrow, not that high.
It's going to be on the cooler side.
Most areas stay under 70 degrees as we look
into the rain forecast then going forward.
So again, we've got the rain tomorrow, maybe something Friday morning,
And then another stretch of dry weather
and actually pretty nice weather.
It does warm up, but it doesn't get hot.
We just see temperatures get into a comfortable range,
typical for this time of year by this weekend.
So the highs for L.A. and inland Orange County, again, 70s.
Notice by Monday, maybe a little over 80 degrees.
For the coast, 60s, then 70s,
and just kind of holding in the 70s for a while.
And for the valleys and the Inland Empire, Friday,
73 degrees, Saturday, 78, and just over 80 on Sunday.
Christine?
New tonight, popular Koreatown retailers reaching out
to the public for help following this brazen break-in.
Surveillance video shows two suspects forcing
their way into the most Los Angeles early Tuesday,
making off with valuable collectible figures before fleeing
in a black Tesla near 7th Street.
Store owner is asking for tips.
The LAPD has arrested five suspected burglars linked
to home break-ins across Southern California.
New video shows the suspects scaling fences and stealing valuables.
Investigators seized weapons, Wi-Fi jammers, and stolen property.
Developing tonight in Riverside County,
two 15-year-old girls faced serious charges
after allegedly plotting a mass shooting at Corona High School.
Authorities say the FBI uncovered social
media messages detailing the plan,
including maps and a hit list.
After a tip from Meta, the company that owns Instagram,
federal agents alerted local police leading
to the girls' arrests, years of bullying may have
motivated the plot. The Riverside County
DA will now take up the case. Frightening day right here
at Bell Gardens High School as police responded
to reports of a gun on campus leading to a lockdown
witnesses described seeing a student pull out a gun
on others, sparking a panic. Two people are now
in custody. All students were safely released
though many remain deeply shaken. We'll be right
back. Tensions boiling over across California
as tens of thousands of state workers with SEIU
Local 1000 stage a historic one-day strike.
Rallies held in downtown LA, Sacramento, and San Francisco.
Union members are demanding fair bargaining,
better pay, and remote work options. Today's
walkouts impacted operations at state offices across the state.
Tonight, a debate over a proposed
city-owned bank. Controversy.
The study on it would cost nearly half a million dollars for
the study. If the bank passes,
we could be the first U.S. city with a public bank.
Fox 11's Matthew Seedorf has more.
We can't even manage our own damn finances. Heated emotions at
L.A. City Hall. 11 ayes, 3 noes.
Council members approving $460,000 to study whether the city
should open its own public bank.
A public bank has the potential to help finance affordable
housing, support small businesses,
and invest in infrastructure that serves communities instead of
private profit. Who in their right mind would
do their financial business and banking with the
bank of the city of LA? Absolutely no one.
Three years ago, city council member and now
mayoral candidate Nithya Raman pushed for the same study and it passed.
What's really exciting
is that we have a potential to fill the gaps
that a reliance on commercial banking has left us with.
But with city budget issues,
the half a million dollar funding was eventually swept back into
reserves. I just wanted to say that I am in support of this study.
Now with LA still facing
a projected $100 million budget gap,
council members approved the $460,000 study again.
What would this public bank look like?
A public bank is a financial institution
owned by us, the people, through the city of LA.
It holds public revenues like taxes and fees.
There are no shareholders. You can't go to an ATM.
You can't open a checking account.
I don't think it's a good idea. While some banking experts warn,
it comes with risk.
The use of taxpayer money, the potential for political influence.
I hope that you'll all join me
in enthusiastically voting yes on this. Thank you.
Raman's office tells Fox 11 she voted yes again Wednesday
because she believes the city needs to
know whether a public bank could be a good investment.
Now the city spends millions each
year in fees to big private banks.
A public bank would let us keep that money here in LA. Half a
million dollars for another consultant
when we have street lights out across the city is ridiculous.
Now LA's mayor isn't part of city council votes
so we reached out to her to see her opinion on
this issue. So far, we're still waiting to hear back.
Matthew Cedillo reporting, Fox 11 News.
L.A. is ramping up transit enforcement starting November 1st.
Dashboard cameras on buses will
catch lane violations downtown, expanding citywide by January.
Meanwhile, the LAPD's proposal for
license plate cameras on streetlights faces privacy concerns.
An L.A. City Council vote
on a pilot program could come next week.
Inglewood city leaders broke ground on the
250 million dollar first phase of the Inglewood Transit Connector.
Mayor James Butt says it's
about creating lasting benefits,
jobs and reduced traffic for residents. The ambitious project
includes three mobility hubs,
downtown streetscape upgrades and a pedestrian bridge to the Metro
K-Line, all targeting a spring
2028 finish before
the Olympics. Good evening, I'm

For the Slovenian superstar, 28 points, 8 boards, 7 assists.
Lakers dominate the season opener, 127-105.
I think, like we talked about after the game, in the group,
you know, we didn't overreact from the first quarter.
I think we gave up 33.
We just changed a couple of things and then stick to it.
I think it was a great defensive effort.
I couldn't wait for this day to come.
You know, obviously preseason is a different thing.
You play games, but obviously
when the regular season starts, you know, it's a lot of fun.
And I'm just happy to be back on court playing.
Clippers opening the season at home against the Kings.
Darius Garland, his fingerprints all over this one.
Up 68-56 in the third.
The lob to Isaiah Jackson, who tips in the layup plus the foul.
He would knock down the free throw, converting to three-point play.
Clips stretch the lead to 20 in the fourth.

A game-high 30 points for Garland tonight.
Clippers dominate the Kings to start their season at 121-96.
Game three of the WNBA Finals.
The series split 1-1 coming
in with Atlanta hitting home court for the first time

Give her the bucket plus the foul,
and she lets the home crowd know she's ready.
Dream kept her foot on the gas all evening long
on top 55-49 in the third.
Reese the rebound, and she is on her way going coast to coast
for another big-time bucket with the left hand.
21 points, 12 boards for Angel Reese.
She leads the way.
Dream blowout the Valkyrie, 97-71,
leading the series now two games to one.
Finally, the results for our Pechanga Sports Poll question,
And will the Luka Doncic era produce a championship for the Lakers?
Long ways to go.
69% of you not believing right now.
Game one of 82.
And, of course, many more years to come.
So we'll see how it turns out in the end.
