All right, you know men, they'll search for a new car for six months,
but then wash his face with whatever's in reach.
Well, our next guest believes it's time
to give men's skin care a little more thought.
Men's skin care doesn't have to be complicated,
but where should you start and what's worth buying?
So here to talk about better habits, shaving,
and the skin under that beard is grooming expert, Chris Salgado.
Welcome.
Welcome back.
Thank you.
It's so nice to be here.
Your hair and beard are looking glorious.
My hair is swinging and banging.
It's real, right?
It's mine.
Nice.
Even if it wasn't, though.
All right.
So are men getting into the grooming game a little bit more now?
I mean, because the teenagers are getting into it.
So the men better hurry up.
The teenagers with no money.
This is really interesting.
Right?
Exactly.
So I think that there's two big shifts we're seeing.
So one, this has been a, like I've been doing this for 42 years.
I was recently at Nordstrom's, Bloomingdale's,
and Blue Mercury all in a row.
And for the very first time,
I had men coming in and referencing products by name.
Now, that may not seem like a big move, but behaviorally,
men will just simply say, oh, I use the white stuff
and kind of be clumsy about it or the yellow stuff.
So now they're actually saying, oh, I love the skin armor.
And if they're with a partner or a friend,
they're actually recommending it.
And that is huge because at the core of that is confidence.
so he now feels like i can step out i can talk about
this and not feel like this isn't for me
and that's a major shift i think the other thing
that we're seeing certainly we're seeing it without
water is that there is this recognition of what
your skin type is I will tell you this it's one
thing to remember it doesn't matter how much you spend
on a product if it isn't right for your skin
type it won't work so you have to know am I oily
am I dry am I combination and that behavior too
so those two big things are a big shift
and your skin changes too it does it might be different
next year yeah which is why we were talking about
that before it's not even just seasonal I mean I
think it changes with age oh it does I mean
when I got into my 50s I definitely had to kick it up
and when I got into my 60s I really had to kick it up
but that's why you want like your skincare
routine should be simple
but it's never one size fits all that's why we do oily skin dry skin
combination skin I live in the northeast it snows
it's humid it's hot it's cold I'm in a cab I'm out
of a cab right you have to think about your skin
and give your skin yeah what it needs at that
moment strategy also I feel like not not just for men
but some women like myself like if there is a
12-step process I'm not doing 12 I just won't
do it I don't want to spend the money because I know
I won't use it so I need like two steps for men
though what would you say for them to get started
in this like if they wanted to pare it down
so men we have to break them of this habit of this
bar soap from head to toe, right? Like it
was what you're saying before, don't just, don't just use your partner's
stuff either, you have your own stuff, yeah right
and again there's that whole thing, but what if
it's not even right for your skin, this is why men stop
because they get something that they're not
happy with it, so I always say get like
a really good facial cleanser, yeah, that does the job and
keep it in the shower, I am a fancy guy
and I am done in 60 seconds, probably another two minutes
for the hair, now that it's longer, I pop out
and I use a moisturizer, so if guys do three things
get a good universal cleanser, get a product
that is right for your skin type, so ask, do you have one
for my oily skin, eye cream
My husband uses eye cream
I'm very proud of him
Can I have the gel?
The cleanser, yes
Because this bottle is nice
It took me two years
to find that shape, I was upset
It looks almost like a glue stick
It looks like a flask to me
And I put it in the shower gel
And that's like a perfect California
sunrise FYI.
Eye cream, make sure you get it in a tube,
not a jar, because you don't want to post
you don't want to be dipping your fingers yeah
and you want something that's dense that's going
to stay you want to feel your eye cream you don't want it
to be so light oh my god it's gone it's
like okay well where did it go you want to feel your eye cream
and so you want to make sure you
have something dense use it morning
and night i see him doing it and i see him using the traps
he uses chapstick he's very big on his chapstick yeah
but he's an og likes the original kind of
carmex or something
no the chapstick actual sunscreen dave has sunscreen is so important
so i watch a lot of your segments
and i know you talk smells good right there's a story behind
it's got sweet almond oil and it will dissolve makeup by the way
because uh we have a lot of
female fans but our number one selling product now
is our moisturizer with spf and that's big
the usage for men especially as we're talking about health
and well-being sunscreen if you
want to keep your skin looking good you want
a neck like that you want hands like these
you use this product on your face your neck
and your hands strategy so this has become our number
one selling product our skidamar with uh spf 50
and that says a lot again about behavior so if
he's doing these three things cleanser sunscreen eye cream
and then use something for night yes
yeah also i would like to say as somebody
who's married to a bearded boo um i have to tell you
I'm so grateful that he takes...
Beard oil.
Yeah, he's got...
I know, he loves a good beard oil.
And for your eyebrows.
And for his eyebrows.
Whoa.
And for your cuticles.
Because let me tell you something,
when you're snuggling up
with your little snuffleupagus,
that they take care of their beard
because the scent...
It can hold smells.
Yeah, it holds a scent.
And I like that it's like a sandalwood or...
Oh, yeah, when it's like a nice, good beard oil.
I've never smelled a beard.
Oh, yeah.
I like that.
So we use lavender oil.
And you can also...
Come on over here.
Put it in your brows.
I'm doing boots on the ground
And for extra credit a little cuticle oil,
yeah, okay, give her that I mean, okay
So that's nice. So men retain odor in their beard
and we secrete odor through our beards
So as somebody who's had a lot of experience with bearded guys
You want something that targets them.
So that's why I made this into a very unique formula.
It's also a skin treatment
It's on my beard right now. I just comb it through
and I used to have a very patchy beard
So it's moisturizing, it smells good, it exfoliates,
it helps with deodorizing, and then you can
put it in your eyebrows, and it'll deepen the color.
How about for shaving, because men shave a lot,
they get irritation, bumps, so what should
they use?
You want to make sure you're using, so first of all,
65% of the guys in this country have
some kind of a beard, so you want something white,
sheers, clear, or smooth target, so
this way he sees where he's going.
It also has an ingredient that lifts the hair,
gives you that great shea, and then calms the skin down afterwards.
So it's not all red and irritated.
Exactly, or bumps.
So we really kind of thought about all skin types
and what do they really need.
And so we went after that.
So if you do this, so I do this, jump in the shower, wash myself,
wash my face, jump out, moisturizer and eye cream, and I am done.
Do you eye cream after sunscreen?
I like to put our eye cream on first
and I use moisturizer I've just trained myself that way
after all my all these years
and I use moisturizer as my final step at night time I step it up with
a regular moisturizer and I mean ladies I plaster my face
and I'm look how great you look but it's
strategy right like you're moisturizing
so you want something that's really hydrating so you
have to think about it that way it's
not just like uh you know what is this random product
that i'm going to use once in a while
when do you use it makes as much of a difference as the
product you've chosen when you use
so also like the way you're you approach your skin like when
i see people rough with their skin
when they're like the pulling and stuff the pulling or like
even when they're wiping makeup off they're just
like oh like you're supposed to pat pat when i
watch my girlfriends i'm always in shock i'm like
your skin is like screaming right now yes like i
haven't put a washcloth i haven't had
a facial i haven't put a brush on my face in over 40 years
like i am so gentle with my skin
but not your beard just your fingers yeah your product should
do the heavy lifting not you
because if you're doing this oh my god around your delicate eyes
you're making a bigger problem
for yourself wrinkles strategy your product should do that
it's it's how you use products are as important
as the products you buy can we talk about men
real quick because this is a thing
It's not on the table, but I see it on your face
You've got nice eyebrows and you have two of them
because you know a lot of men don't clean up the middle right?
oh so they have i see yeah
like first of all your eyebrow should start here as my mom always said
should start here, the pencil rule, and eyebrows are super important
They frame everything.
They do, yeah.
They, like, change your entire expression.
So what's a good tip for the guys to,
like, help keep their eyebrows clean?
But, like, you know, still...
Let me tell you something.
If your eyebrows are, like,
more manicured than mine, that's weird to me.
That's what I'm saying.
So, like, thick...
It has to be minimal for a guy.
Minimal.
And only clean up underneath.
You want to be careful with the shape.
Like, all of us, again, to me, it's strategy.
Like, right?
Like, I've always wanted just smooth skin.
So one thing I don't have out here, but a comb.
it's like you see, I see somebody in a beautiful Tom Ford suit
and I'll look down at those shoes
and be like what are you thinking
and then on the face they'll have a really great complexion
and the eyebrows are going every which way
and I'm just like comb those down, like I can't stand
it, like just comb them down, that's
your next product, I know you can take your beard oil and
yeah, I don't leave the house without an eyebrow brush
and I'm very serious, like you use like a
spoolie or something else, no like
an actual plastic, yes yes yes, I have a comb in that bag
over there, I bring it to your brows, see
for my brow and my beard, I just, it's just little things that um that you
that you want to have that will just help with the maintenance
but maintenance, my, I'm not a big uh
waxer, okay, find yourself a good plucker
and then just kind of zip them, you do it underneath but
for and for my lady friends, oh my god, you asked for something
and it appears, yeah yeah yes and
then here and then hopefully it's
in here I'm gonna look for it, all right, well show us your magic
my carbon fiber comb, thank you
so much for all these great tips, making it easy for men to look
good and feel good, there now it's like you
were in my bathroom, that's right, good to see you, thank
you so much, thank you so much for having me, you can shop
