Despite reporting issues like stabbings and safety hazards to LA County officials, residents claim there has been no meaningful action, leaving the community feeling unsafe in their own homes.
Got a story you'll see only on Fox 11.
An East Los Angeles neighborhood is frustrated
that a homeless encampment has moved in, bringing crime to the area.
Fox 11's Nick Garcia is live in East LA with their concerns.
Nick. Right, Christine. We're on Woods Avenue just south
of Whittier Boulevard in what is typically a pretty quiet neighborhood.
But the people who live here say ever since that encampment moved in,
it's been a nightmare at times, a noisy nightmare.
Just take a listen to what they woke up to Sunday morning.
That's our weekend zone,
and it has been that way for a while.
Ricardo Lopez says what you just heard there
was a woman being attacked by pit bulls
that belonged to unhoused people living
on the sidewalk along Woods Avenue in East L.A.
He and his neighbors have been dealing
with this encampment for over a year.
Every day they're just out there pounding 40s, doing their drugs,
and now Woods Avenue has become a mini corridor for drug trafficking.
A lot of them have concerns about drugs and stuff like that,
being so close to their homes and their kids.
Do you see that out here?
Well, you see that everywhere, but not us, no.
This home security video shows a man climbing over a wall
and trying to open the door of a nearby house.
The neighbors say the violent behavior is escalating.
On Friday, there was a stabbing.
The neighbors have reported their concerns to L.A. County Supervisor
Hilda Solis' office and other county agencies to no avail.
When they tell us, wow, we're doing a study,
we're looking into it and all this, just enforce the law.
He says the encampments are a clear violation of the Americans
with Disabilities Act, taking up the entire sidewalk.
He says used needles, trash and human waste also line the streets.
We can't come out at night where we used
to be able to walk down our street at night
and be able to walk our kids
and you know you know in the evening can't do that no more.
They took their concerns to Supervisor Solis's East L.A. office today.
I appreciate them taking the time to listen to us
but once again we get the same rhetoric.
And of course we did reach out
to Supervisor Solis's office for comment we haven't heard
back just yet but representatives
from her office did tell the neighbors today
that the county is working on a solution soon they're crossing
their fingers and of course
we'll continue to follow this for you live
