The United States has launched strikes against Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. Central Command, CENTCOM, said on Tuesday. According to US officials cited by Axios, the operation is part of a plan discussed in recent days by President Donald Trump and his advisers. The strikes are intended to be limited in scope and aimed at preventing Iran from rebuilding radar and missile capabilities that could be used to attack ships in the strategic waterway. The operation is designed to reduce the risk of Iranian attacks on oil tankers, U.S. Navy vessels and American military aircraft operating in the region. One U.S. official described the objective as needing to “mow the grass” - a reference to repeatedly weakening Iran’s military capabilities before they can be rebuilt.
CENTCOM said the strikes targeted facilities belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC. “Today at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time, U.S. armed forces began striking IRGC facilities in Iran,” the command said. CENTCOM said the attacks were carried out in response to recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. personnel stationed in the region. Washington said the operation is intended to protect American forces and commercial shipping in the strategically vital waterway. The strikes follow a U.S. attack on August 31 against two IRGC missile launchers on Iran’s Larak Island. The IRGC said several Iranian military personnel and civilians were killed or wounded, without providing an exact casualty figure. The force vowed to retaliate and hold those responsible accountable. The latest escalation comes after Trump said on August 25 that U.S. Navy forces had removed or destroyed all mines along the main international shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran was warned that any vessels attempting to lay new mines would be destroyed.
