Fear is growing in the Kremlin as the so-called "SVO" continues. For the fourth time since the full-scale war, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has expanded the staff of the central office of the Federal Protective Service, which is responsible for his security. The decree was published on August 31 in the Official Publication of Legal Acts of the Russian Federation. The staff will be increased by 27 more people, from 785 to 812. Over the past nearly five years, since the so-called "SVO" was launched, the Russian dictator has already increased the size of his personal security detail four times. Prior to that, it had remained unchanged for 12 years. The Federal Protective Service is responsible for protecting not only the head of the Kremlin, but also members of his family, the prime minister, and other top government officials. Putin is beefing up his security amid rumors that even within his inner circle, discontent with the war and the growing costs of this aggression is growing. After nearly five years of war, the aggressor country's elites view it as a waste of time, while Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian territory are disrupting stability. Against this backdrop, Putin, according to the magazine's sources, has decided to escalate the situation further. This includes escalating strikes on Ukraine and deploying an additional 300,000-400,000 troops to the front. At the same time, one of The Economist's sources believes that continuing the war in its current format is becoming increasingly unprofitable for the Kremlin: it drains resources and political capital without ensuring a decisive outcome. Separately, sources claim that Putin may have perceived CIA Director John Ratcliffe's recent visit to Moscow as a sign of US weakness. According to the publication's sources, the dictator may have drawn a parallel with William Burns's visit to Moscow in 2021, after which, despite American warnings, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
