Thousands of drones instead of shells: Russia's tactics changed due to Ukrainian strike zones

The Russian occupiers historically followed Soviet doctrine, emphasizing the use of concentrated firepower to destroy enemy defenses before the advance of maneuverable forces. This firepower was traditionally provided by a combination of tanks and artillery.
While this approach yielded some successes for Russia in the early stages of the ongoing war with Ukraine, it now faces a serious challenge from Ukraine's "kill zones." These zones extend outward from Ukrainian lines and are patrolled by drones that specifically search for Russian equipment and personnel, Forbes writes.
Over the past year, these zones have expanded in many regions beyond the effective range of Russian artillery and armored vehicles, limiting their combat effectiveness. At the tactical level, however, Russia appears to have found a solution to this problem through the use of FPV drones, journalists say. Russia has begun deploying thousands of radio-controlled FPV drones daily near Druzhkivka and Dobropillya as part of its efforts to capture these towns. This increase in use coincides with Russia's reorganization of some of its armored units into drone-assault formations. By using drones to deliver fire, Russia can maintain its traditional doctrine, replacing many of the roles previously performed by artillery and tanks. During the fighting in Donbas in 2022, Russian occupiers fired approximately 20,000 artillery shells per day, and over 32,000 on peak days. This firepower allowed them to first wear down the Ukrainian defenses and then advance their infantry and vehicles. But if the offensive wasn't fast enough, Ukrainian forces had time to regroup and hold their positions. Ukrainian drones have gradually undermined this approach. Their strike zones now extend 10-15 kilometers from the front line, with individual strikes reaching 30 kilometers, according to media reports. This has also put artillery at risk—in particular, the D-30 and 2S1 systems, with a range of approximately 15-22 kilometers. In recent months, the Russian Ministry of Defense has significantly reduced the number of videos of artillery in action—its importance on the front lines is diminishing. In the northern parts of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, Russia is reportedly disbanding tank battalions, redistributing the troops into drone and assault units.
This is especially noticeable around Druzhkivka, a town in Ukraine's "fortress belt." Russian drone operators launch over 1,500 FPV drones a day there, targeting Ukrainian positions and supply routes, and another 1,200 per day in the direction of Dobropillia. This doesn't include fiber-optic-controlled drones, which are harder to detect, the report states.
The massive use of FPV drones allows Russia to achieve the same tactical and psychological effects that artillery once provided: forcing Ukrainian troops to take cover, clearing the way for assault groups. Drones also have practical advantages – a smaller physical footprint, easier operator training, and a lower cost of losing one compared to a weapon or armored vehicle. As technology advances, Ukrainian drones will operate at ever greater ranges, pushing Russian artillery even further away. At the same time, Russia will increase the use of its own long-range drones, gradually converting more armored and artillery units into drone-supported assault units.
