The military-analytics publication Defense Express writes that debris from the strike on Russian targets in occupied Donetsk highly likely indicates Ukraine's first use of the new JDAM-LR cruise missile , with a range of up to 550 km. While there is no official confirmation of the transfer of these missiles to Ukraine, the publication offers a detailed analysis based on photographs of the recovered fragments. After the strikes, photographs of debris from the landing sites began to appear online. Based on markings on one of the fragments, the Russians determined that one of the targets had been hit by Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles. But other debris —remnants of wings and airframe attachments—attracted particular attention. The code 6F8W7 was spotted on one of the fragments . Defense Express reports that it belongs to the Australian company Ferra Aerospace, which partners with Boeing and has been producing wing kits for JDAM-ER guided bombs since the 2000s. The standard JDAM-ER has a stated range of approximately 75 km. This is insufficient for a Ukrainian aircraft to safely strike Donetsk without entering the highly dangerous zone near the front line. Therefore, some Russian sources have suggested that Ukraine may have used the new, jet-powered JDAM-LR. The JDAM-LR effectively transforms an aerial bomb into a cruise missile. Thanks to its jet engine, its stated range exceeds 300 nautical miles— approximately 555 km. This is more than sufficient to strike targets in Donetsk from a safe distance. The JDAM-LR system is mounted on a 500-pound Mk-82 bomb weighing approximately 227 kg. According to Defense Express, such a warhead could have been sufficient to destroy a four-story factory building , where, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Russian headquarters were located. JDAM-LR guidance is achieved using an inertial system and GPS. Conventional JDAMs previously had issues with resistance to Russian electronic warfare systems, but the accurate hits in Donetsk may indicate that the new version has partially addressed these issues. Theoretically, JDAM-LR can be launched from aircraft capable of using conventional JDAMs. In Ukraine, this includes not only F-16s but also upgraded MiG-29s and Su-27s. If Ukraine has indeed received JDAM-LR missiles, even a small pilot batch, Russian headquarters, warehouses, and command posts located hundreds of kilometers away face a new threat. This weapon could become another element of pressure on Russian military infrastructure, along with Storm Shadow/SCALP, drones, and Ukrainian long-range missile developments.
