Kramatorsk , which for many years remained an important Ukrainian city in the rear of the Donetsk region, is increasingly suffering from Russian strikes. The city is gradually emptying, residents are restricting their movements, and those who remain are trying to continue working even under the threat of drones and aerial bombs, reports the Kyiv Independent.
At one of the local markets, vendors start arriving around six in the morning. The number of customers has significantly decreased, but people still need to make a living. 54-year-old Sergey, who has been selling there for 15 years, was trying to sell his last two chickens when an FPV drone flew overhead.
"See, it flies away, and no one even flinches anymore, because people have become accustomed to bad things," the man said. "We can't do anything about it anyway." According to the vendor, there's a concrete shelter at the market, but people rarely use it, even during explosions. Familiar faces and a familiar work routine help residents maintain at least some sense of normalcy.
Meanwhile, the situation in the city is rapidly deteriorating. Kramatorsk has been officially classified as an active combat zone. In August alone, according to the Donetsk Regional State Administration as of August 26, at least 13 people were killed in the city, and approximately 150 more were injured.
Russian troops are located approximately 10 kilometers from Kramatorsk. The city is regularly attacked by FPV drones, especially in the morning and at night, while guided bombs are increasingly used during the day. Streets are covered with special nets, which partially protect vehicles from drones but do not protect against airstrikes. Military analyst Michael Kofman noted that Kramatorsk is increasingly facing the same dangers as other cities in Donbas:
"The city is becoming dangerous for the civilian population due to Russian drones operating in the eastern districts and daily bombings using glide bombs."
Those who lost their jobs due to the strikes are having a particularly hard time. Fifty-year-old Lyudmila Drovko worked at a supermarket in Kramatorsk until it was destroyed by a Russian airstrike on August 3. She transferred to another job, but on August 20, that place, too, was destroyed by a Russian airstrike.
"We don't sleep; the attacks are constant and always unexpected. We hear loud explosions, and everything inside us shakes as we instinctively take cover," she said.
Drovko says she's not ready to leave Kramatorsk. She's spent her entire life in this city—she got married, gave birth to her son, and created some of her fondest family memories here. Now, familiar places remind her of the destruction.
The woman says parks and courtyards that were once full of children are deserted. Power and water outages can last for days, and hospitals are gradually closing.
"We can't believe what's happening to the city right now," she says.
And then he adds: "The city is dying." Not all residents are confident they'll stay in Kramatorsk for the rest of their lives.
