At least 35 people were detained outside the Russian Supreme Court building in Moscow, where the Yabloko party, which opposes the war in Ukraine, is hearing its appeal against the decision to bar it from participating in the parliamentary elections. This was reported by Kirill Goncharov, head of the party's Moscow branch. According to him, the detainees were taken to the Khamovniki and Arbat police stations. Goncharov stated that he personally observed the events and considered the detentions unfounded. Among those detained was 73-year-old Yabloko State Duma candidate and actor Viktor Balabanov, who, incidentally, wore a pacemaker. He appeared in court as a witness in the case. Human rights activists also reported the arrest of Yabloko activist Yevgenia Titova. According to party representatives and human rights activists, police officers attempted to disperse Yabloko supporters who had gathered outside the courthouse. In Petrozavodsk, a court barred the Yabloko party, which advocates for ending Russia's war against Ukraine, from participating in municipal elections. The court upheld the deregistration of Yabloko's candidate list for the Karelia Legislative Assembly. The court asserted that the first financial report submitted by this political party to the regional electoral commission for registration of the candidate list was allegedly signed by an "unauthorized person." The Yabloko party is also slated to be disqualified from the State Duma elections scheduled for the fall of 2026. On July 29, the Central Election Commission registered this political force for participation in the State Duma elections. The party's federal list of candidates included 269 people. Another 135 candidates submitted documents to run in single-mandate constituencies. In early August, Rodina party chairman Alexei Zhuravlev filed a lawsuit in the Russian Supreme Court seeking to disqualify Yabloko from the elections to the lower house of the Russian parliament. The lawsuit alleges several formal violations, including the alleged misuse of intellectual property and support for the LGBT movement. Furthermore, the plaintiff claims that this political force allegedly committed violations in the financing of its election campaign. It's worth noting that Yabloko is the only party running in the Russian State Duma elections that advocates a swift end to the war against Ukraine. For this reason, its members are labeled "foreign agents."
Recall, pro-Kremlin Rodina party filed a lawsuit against the opposition political force. Its representatives accuse Yabloko of overspending on election campaigning and distributing materials through "foreign agents" and foreign social media. Later in the hearing, a Rodina representative also alleged that Yabloko violated copyright by using a photograph of the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. However, the prosecution makes no secret of its claim: it doesn't even know who owns the photograph. The situation has attracted additional attention amid growing interest in Yabloko online. Over the past two weeks, engagement with publications about the party has increased 4.5-fold, according to unofficial data from independent sources.
