A fire broke out at an electrical substation in Cheboksary in Russia’s Chuvashia Republic, near the VNIIR-Progress military-related plant. The incident occurred at a substation on Ivan Yakovlev Street, close to the VNIIR-Progress enterprise, which has previously been targeted in strikes involving Ukraine’s Flamingo missile, according to Ukrainian reports. Video footage shared on social media appears to show a massive fire at the facility, with large flames and thick smoke rising from the site. Cheboksary Mayor Stanislav Trofimov said an emergency situation had occurred at the power facility but did not provide details about what caused it. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry department for Chuvashia confirmed that a fire had broken out at the substation. Twenty firefighters and six pieces of firefighting equipment were dispatched to the scene. Emergency crews were also working to switch electricity networks to backup supplies while dealing with the consequences of the incident, the mayor said. The incident marks the second reported disruption involving Russian energy infrastructure in two days. A similar fire was reported at a power substation in the Moscow region the previous day.
The cause of the Cheboksary fire has not been publicly established.
