Since April, Russia has attacked more than 200 gas stations in Ukraine using drones, cruise missiles, and glide bombs, at least 80 of them in the Kharkiv region, Der Spiegel reports.

Ukrainian officials believe this is revenge against Russia, a retaliatory measure for successful Ukrainian attacks on refineries and oil terminals deep in Russia.

"Their position is: if we've run out of gas, why should everything continue as usual for you?" said Vitaliy Dyakivnych, head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration. Russian oil refineries are mostly owned by large corporations or the state, while Ukrainian gas stations are often run by independent operators. And unlike oil refineries, gas stations are regularly frequented by civilians.

"There are two main goals behind this. The first is to sow terror and break the spirit of resistance among ordinary people. The second is propaganda. When Russian kamikaze drones crash into Ukrainian gas stations, they record videos that are then distributed online," explained Serhiy Kuyun, an expert on the Ukrainian fuel market.

It's worth noting that for Ukrainians, gas stations are much more than just a place to fill up—they're a social institution, a meeting place where people linger longer than necessary to eat a hot dog with friends.

To the east of Poltava, on the important M-03 highway connecting Kyiv with Kharkiv, only a few undamaged petrol stations remain.

Importantly, large chains restore approximately 80% of attacked gas stations—not always completely restoring the architecture, but at least restoring functionality. Sandbags, concrete blocks, and anti-drone nets are used for reinforcement. Most fuel tanks are located underground under concrete pavement and therefore withstand attacks.

Thus, while Russia's anti-gas station campaign has sowed fear and caused economic hardship, it has not yet led to widespread fuel shortages.

A few days ago, an AI-powered drone attacked a tanker truck near the Romanian border, where Ukraine imports fuel. Kuyun explained:

"Drivers no longer want to take these routes because it's very dangerous. It could disrupt supplies and distribution. Compared to that, attacks on gas stations are a less serious problem."

It is worth noting that at the beginning of August, a new wave of the fuel crisis began in the Russian Federation , associated with Ukraine's attacks on oil refineries.

Residents of various regions—from the south of the country to Primorsky Krai—reported hours-long lines at gas stations. Some regions are reintroducing restrictions on gasoline sales per customer. According to Meduza , residents across various regions—from the south of the country to Primorsky Krai—are reporting hours-long lines at gas stations. Some regions are reintroducing restrictions on gasoline sales per customer.

According to media reports, queues for fuel have formed at gas stations in at least 12 Russian regions. These include Krasnodar Krai, Voronezh, Kaluga, Rostov, Ryazan, Tambov, Tula, Saratov, Smolensk, Penza, and Ulyanovsk Oblasts, as well as Primorsky Krai.
