Ukrainian drone strikes on occupied Crimea have noticeably intensified in recent months. These attacks have made life on the peninsula nearly unbearable, according to the American publication NPR .
Crimea, usually overflowing with tourists in the summer, is experiencing a completely different reality this year. The publication notes that Ukrainian strikes are increasingly impacting the daily lives of civilians. One resident of the peninsula described the situation on social media:
"Transportation has completely stopped. There's no gasoline, no fuel, no electricity. Stores are closed. Banks are closed. Nothing works at all. There's no water either." The author of the publication recalls that since Russia seized Crimea in 2014, approximately one million Russian military personnel and civilians have moved to the peninsula. At the same time, a significant portion of the Ukrainian population has left Crimea. Its current population is estimated at approximately 2.5 million.
For the past few years, Ukraine has declared its intention to retake the peninsula and periodically launched strikes against Russian military installations. However, in recent months, the intensity of the campaign has significantly escalated. Military installations in northern Crimea have been particularly heavily attacked. However, supply shortages are increasingly affecting the civilian population as well.
According to former US Navy Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery, this creates a serious problem for the Kremlin.
"It's impossible to keep that many people in a place with limited water, no fuel, and limited food supplies. I mean, they're going to have to leave," he said.
A separate focus of Ukrainian attacks has been Russian ships and ferries delivering fuel, food, and other essential supplies to Crimea. Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk stated that over the past month, Ukrainian forces have struck more than 130 Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov and more than 80 in the Black Sea.
"Russia overestimated its naval power and didn't expect such actions from us. Now they're trying to catch up with our technology. But they need six months, and we're continuing to improve. Russia is now at a logistical impasse," he noted.
At the same time, the author of the publication emphasizes that it is too early to talk about the imminent liberation of Crimea by military means. Ukrainian forces lack the capacity to launch a large-scale offensive to recapture the peninsula. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine is not yet attempting to recapture Crimea directly, as the priority remains preserving lives.
Thus, as the NPR article states, the Ukrainian attacks do not yet change the fact of Russian control over Crimea, but they are increasingly undermining Moscow's ability to ensure the normal functioning of the peninsula. At the same time, the Kremlin, which after seizing Crimea called it "an integral part of Russia," now, as the author notes, barely comments on the problems arising in the occupied territory.
