As reported President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the results of the offensive operation , which had been conducted at the junction of the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk regions since January 2026. The Ukrainian army managed to liberate the largest territory since the fall of 2022. The first phase of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation in the Oleksandrivka sector began on January 29. At the same time, the Russian army was conducting offensive operations on the flanks, attempting to capture the villages of Velykymykhaylovka and Novopavlovka to the north in the Dnipropetrovsk regionTo disrupt the Russian military's plans, the Ukrainian military command developed and launched a counter-offensive operation in this area.

The first part of the operation lasted from the end of January to April, and the second from May 5 to the beginning of August.

The operation was carried out by four airborne assault brigades and two assault regiments. According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Major General Mykhailo Drapatoy , during the first stage of the offensive operation, it was possible to liberate an area of 450 square kilometers, and during the second, 490 square kilometers.

Overall, during the offensive, they managed to take control of 745 square kilometers and clear approximately 300 square kilometers of Russian infiltrated groups in the rear area, according to Ukrainian authorities. Ukrainian military also eliminated the threat of an offensive on Zaporizhzhia along the Donetsk-Zaporizhzhia highway.

The Russian military command has not commented on claims of success by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Oleksandrivske sector. However, it should be noted that the Russian Ministry of Defense continued to report its "advancement" in the Dnipropetrovsk region throughout the spring and summer.

The actual expulsion of Russian troops from the Dnipropetrovsk region is largely a political result.

But from a military perspective, it is important for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to get closer to the logistical routes used by the Russian army in the south. Thus, as of August 13, Ukrainian troops are 3-4 km from the Velyka Novosilka-Hulyaipole road and continue to advance in this direction in the area of the villages of Uspenivka and Temirovka.

This means that this route, crucial for the Russian group's logistics, is no longer safe. This is forcing Russian troops to seek other routes for the delivery of food, ammunition, and personnel, especially near Hulyaipole, which they captured late last year.

In addition, the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to unleash fighting for the village of Komar, located on the banks of the Mokrye Yaly River, 15 km north of Velyka Novosyolka.

Russian troops captured this large settlement at the end of the winter of 2025 and turned it into their stronghold.

Konstantin Mashovets, a military analyst with the Information Resistance group, points out that Ukrainian forces need to cover several more to get close enough to establish fire control over Velyka Novosilka. It is also unknown whether the Russian command is ready to deploy additional forces to stop the enemy in this direction, which, apparently, is not a priority for the Kremlin at the moment.
