Russian ruler Vladimir Putin is increasingly wary of Ukrainian drones and is clearing the political landscape of any competitors as discontent with his war grows within Russia. He is already avoiding travel to regions vulnerable to attacks from Kyiv. Amid the fuel crisis, rising prices, and deep strikes on Russian territory, the Kremlin is increasing pressure on any signs of dissent.

Putin has allegedly begun avoiding areas vulnerable to Kyiv drones, Express reports . During a recent visit to Kazan, entire streets were closed, electric scooters were banned, and the internet was shut down to protect the president. During a trip to Siberia, local residents suffering from fuel shortages were temporarily offered low-cost fuel—only for the duration of Putin's stay in the region—but prices rose sharply again as soon as he left.

At the same time, the Kremlin is carrying out a harsh purge of any dissenting voices. At least 23 politicians have been banned from participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections, and some have been jailed for allegedly displaying "extremist" symbols, particularly those associated with assassinated opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Even longtime members of the so-called "systemic opposition" are now fleeing for their own safety – politician Boris Nadezhdin left Russia after threats to his safety. The Yabloko party, the only one openly opposed to the war , is now under threat of a complete ban, as the Kremlin attempts to prevent voters from expressing their anger through the ballot box.

"Currently, in the fifth year of the war, there are no signs that the Kremlin is relaxed or confident in its control over public opinion. The fear of some kind of challenge from below is so deep that it manifests itself in an increasingly strong reflex to strengthen security," said Nigel Gould-Davies, a senior fellow at the International Institute.

Despite widespread discontent, officials loyal to the Kremlin stepped up their displays of devotion. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin forced deputies to chant "Russia! Putin! Victory!" five times, after which Putin himself awarded him the medal "For Valiant Labor." Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov went even further, declaring on state television that Putin's rise to power proves that Russia is "marked by God."

According to Express sources, a worried Putin is granting increasing powers to the FSB to suppress dissent . The Kremlin's concerns are heightened by Ukraine bringing the conflict directly to Moscow's doorstep. A recent mysterious explosion at a restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square killed five people, including senior commander Alexander Chaiko, while a car bomb left one of Russia's leading drone manufacturers in critical condition. Furthermore, Ukrainian strikes inflicted serious damage on the retail giant Wildberries, destroying a quarter of its warehouse capacity and causing billions in losses.

Putin's public support continues to decline, and international criticism is growing, leaving the dictator even more isolated. Tightened security measures during travel and the increased powers of the security services indicate that the ruling elite recognizes the reality of an internal threat, not just a foreign war.

Party functionaries' show of loyalty contrasts with the real mood of society, which is suffering from an economic crisis and the consequences of military conflict on its own soil. This exacerbates the gap between the propaganda façade and the real state of affairs in the country.
