Ukraine, by shifting military action to Russian territory, has significantly weakened Russia's position, and the country is now in its most vulnerable state since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. This is stated in an analytical article by Newsweek. According to the publication, in recent weeks, Ukrainian drones have attacked eight Wildberries marketplace logistics centers located in the Moscow and Leningrad regions, Krasnodar, and occupied Simferopol. As a result, the company lost more than 10% of its warehouse capacity.
Analysts estimate that restoring the damaged facilities could cost approximately $460 million. The value of the destroyed goods, many of which belonged to small Russian businesses, could reach into the billions of dollars. Another serious blow, as the author of the article notes, were the attacks on Russian oil refineries. According to Joseph Epstein, director of the Turan research center and senior fellow at the Yorktown Institute, approximately a quarter of the country's refining capacity was disabled. The expert claims that this forced Russian authorities to impose restrictions on fuel supplies in more than half of the regions. As a result, one of the world's largest oil exporters faced a fuel shortage even for the domestic market. The article also examines US President Donald Trump's policy toward Russia. The author notes that, despite years of criticism, his approach has proven most effective in weakening Moscow since the collapse of the USSR.
According to the author of the article, Trump remains the only American president during whose tenure Vladimir Putin did not expand Russia's territorial acquisitions. The article recalls that during George W. Bush's presidency, the war with Georgia occurred; under Barack Obama, Russia annexed Crimea and launched military operations in Donbas; and during Joe Biden's presidency, a full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
At the same time, the author emphasizes that during Trump's first presidential term, Russia did not gain control over any new states, additional regions, or strategic ports. According to the author of the article, Washington's new line is based on two main principles.
The first is to grant Ukraine greater autonomy. European allies provide financial support, the United States supplies weapons, and decisions on the use of drones are made directly by Kyiv. According to the author, this is precisely the kind of freedom of action Ukraine lacked under the Biden administration, which feared further escalation of the conflict due to Russia's nuclear arsenal. The second principle is related to the shifting balance of power in the post-Soviet space. While the Kremlin has focused its resources on the war against Ukraine, the United States is gaining the opportunity to strengthen its influence in countries in the region where Moscow is no longer able to effectively defend its own interests. Joseph Epstein believes that Russia's current situation is the result of decisions made by Vladimir Putin himself.
In his opinion, over two decades, significant financial revenues were directed not toward economic development, but toward enriching the ruling elite, building luxurious residences, and funneling capital abroad. As a result, the country was insufficiently prepared for a protracted military confrontation.
The expert believes that the further development of the situation largely depends on the position of the current US leadership. While previous US administrations, seeking to maintain stability, effectively reduced pressure on Moscow, Trump, according to the author of the article, has chosen to exploit the current circumstances to increase pressure.
In conclusion, the analyst concludes that Russia is currently in its weakest state since 1991, and neighboring states expect this trend to continue.
