Ukrainian troops conducted their first combat operation, during which a heavy drone delivered and dropped a ground robot carrying an anti-tank mine behind enemy lines, Forbes reports.
According to available information, a heavy drone acted as an "air carrier", delivering the ARK-1 ground robotic complex deep behind the front lines.
As the article states, this tactic is called "marsupial"—by analogy with marsupials, where one vehicle transports and "releases" another. The author notes that a similar idea—drones transporting other drones or robots—was discussed as a concept even before the war. In Ukraine, this approach is also actively used for FPV drones: large carrier drones transport smaller vehicles closer to the target and release them there. In addition to the airborne version, according to the publication, Ukrainian forces have already tested a naval version of this tactic: during the first-ever unmanned amphibious landing on the Kinburn Spit, a robotic boat delivered a tracked ground robot with a remote-controlled machine gun, which then disembarked and moved inland. This was likely a reconnaissance mission to identify any remaining Russian troops in the area.
It's noted that the Pentagon tested nearly identical solutions back in 2003, 2009, and 2014—specifically, Project STORK, in which a drone parachuted a ground robot for reconnaissance, as well as airdrops of ground vehicles using Fire Scout and K-MAX unmanned helicopters. However, none of these projects ever entered service. One of the researchers, according to the author, noted with disappointment at the time: "Everything worked fine, but no one was particularly interested."
Unlike the US with its resources, Ukraine has assembled a working system on a limited budget – and has already used it in real combat, the media notes.
The author also points to the parallel development of similar technologies in China, which recently demonstrated a multicopter dropping a quadrupedal robot armed with a machine gun. According to him, this design is better suited to urban conditions and is even capable of climbing stairs.
Ukraine is already testing larger cargo drones with a payload capacity of over 90 kilograms. These could be used not only for logistics and evacuating the wounded, but also for transporting heavier ground robots. According to available reports, in some sectors of the front, Ukraine plans to replace up to 30% of frontline personnel with robotic systems this year.
Fire Point previously revealed how many missiles the FP-1 and FP-2 drones can carry. CEO Irina Terekh noted that these are old Soviet-era 57mm S-5 rockets, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces have vast stockpiles of but are rarely used. Therefore, using drones for this mission allows for more efficient use of them. Terekh clarified that the drone is capable of carrying eight such missiles, and their use helps counter mobile interception groups without interfering with the drone's primary mission. It has also emerged that Russians are collecting surviving Ukrainian drones , repairing them, and preparing them for future provocations. This was reported on Telegram by Sergei Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian president and a specialist in radio technology. He stated that it is a mistake to assume that the mysterious drones spotted over Europe are exclusively Russian Supercams and Orlans with stars on their wings.
