US helps Ukraine to destroy Russian Iskander missiles before they are launched

The fastest way to reduce the threat of Russian ballistic missile strikes against Ukraine may not be by increasing the supply of air defense systems, but by expanding the capabilities of Ukrainian F-16 fighters. To achieve this, Washington only needs to make one decision. Former US Navy Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery expressed this opinion in a column for The Washington Post . The author emphasizes that Ukraine remains vulnerable as long as it relies primarily on intercepting Russian missiles with air defense systems. According to him, the existing air defense system is not capable of completely eliminating the threat of ballistic strikes, and the shortage of modern interceptors only exacerbates the problem. Montgomery uses a figurative comparison, noting that Ukraine needs to "not only reflect the arrows, but also defeat the archers," that is, destroy the launchers before the missiles are launched. He recalls that the United States previously approved the transfer of 3,350 ERAM high-precision, extended-range air-to-air missiles to Ukraine. These missiles are capable of striking targets at ranges of over 480 kilometers and remain effective even under intense electronic countermeasures. In his opinion, such weapons will allow Ukrainian aircraft to destroy mobile ballistic missile launchers, ammunition depots, logistics hubs, air bases, and command posts without exposing pilots to excessive risk. Montgomery notes that ERAM missiles are currently only permitted for use on modernized Soviet-made aircraft, and their full integration with the F-16 is not yet available. According to the author, the most effective solution would be an accelerated software update for American fighters. This would allow for the full integration of ERAM missiles with the F-16's weapons control systems, as well as the ability to program flight paths and target coordinates before takeoff, with the ability to adjust them during the mission. If the software update requires additional time, the author proposes an interim solution: equipping Ukrainian F-16s with special weapons pylons from the Danish company Terma. Although this option provides fewer missile control capabilities, it will allow aircraft to adapt to ERAM use much more quickly and expand their combat capabilities. Montgomery believes that combining the reconnaissance capabilities of Ukrainian drones with ERAM-armed F-16s will allow them to engage Russian mobile launchers, including Iskander systems, immediately before strikes. The author emphasizes that each destroyed launcher means dozens of missiles not fired at Ukrainian cities and, at the same time, allows for savings on expensive Patriot interceptor missiles, which cost millions of dollars.
Recall, media reviously reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a recent visit to Washington, asked his American counterpart, Donald Trump, to use Starlink for ballistic missile strikes in Russia.
SpaceX is currently restricting Starlink operations in Russia. Ukrainian long-range drones are using other targeting methods to target oil refineries, warehouses, factories, and other important aggressor facilities. The main threat to Ukraine today is Russian ballistic missiles. Ukraine's air defenses lack the means to intercept them. A solution could be to target launchers deep within Russia, but this requires Starlink satellite communications. During his visit to the US, Zelenskyy also wanted to meet with Elon Musk in person to discuss this initiative. However, sources claim the entrepreneur declined the meeting. According to sources, Zelenskyy explained to Trump that using Starlink could be a faster and cheaper solution than supplying the scarce Patriot interceptor missiles. Ukraine had previously requested 300 of these missiles, but was denied approval. If Musk refuses to allow Starlink to be used for such operations, Kyiv has offered an alternative: access to the Starshield military satellite system, developed by SpaceX for the Pentagon's defense needs. However, switching to Starshield will require additional integration and will make drone deployment more complex and expensive for Ukraine.
