Firefighters continued battling major wildfires across Spain on Monday, with one blaze outside Madrid potentially becoming the largest in the country's recent history, according to media reports. According to Associated Press the blaze in Ávila province, less than 100 kilometres west of Madrid, has burned an estimated 47,000 hectares after raging for several days, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said. If confirmed, the estimate would make it Spain's largest wildfire since official records began in 1968. Firefighters are also battling major wildfires in the Sierra Oeste region west of Madrid and in neighbouring Toledo province. Together with the Ávila blaze, the three fires have burned about 77,000 hectares of woodland and scrub. The Interior Ministry in Madrid put the total number of people affected by evacuations and movement restrictions at around 90,000. Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said on Monday the fires were part of a “climate emergency” after his country on Friday declared a national fire emergency for the first time. “What we are experiencing is not a series of isolated incidents. It is the consequence of a climate emergency that is making wildfires even more violent, heat waves more frequent," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said. The wildfires have significantly shifted the mood in the country, where just a week ago huge crowds of people took to the streets to celebrate their second FIFA World Cup triumph.
