"A terrifying game of hide-and-seek": what's happening in Ukraine's "death zone"

In the "death zone" on the Ukrainian front – a strip of land about 30 kilometers wide that runs along the line of contact – a terrifying game of hide-and-seek is unfolding as thousands of reconnaissance and attack drones swarm the skies, hunting down and destroying anything that moves.
Soldiers on both sides are moving in small groups to avoid detection, often on foot. However, drones still relentlessly pursue them, and the losses are staggering. Reuters reports on what's happening in this deadly corridor along the 1,200-kilometer front line .
The development of drone technology has forced both sides to abandon the outdated tactics of concentrating troops, equipment, and artillery, as visible targets are easy prey for drones. Instead, groups of just two or three soldiers hide in tiny dugouts underground. Infantrymen often act as observers, avoiding direct combat that could reveal their position and instead calling in drones to destroy targets, said an officer with the Ukrainian drone brigade "Birds of Magyar," call sign "Silhouette."
At the same time, the lack of manpower in Ukraine means that positions on the front lines are widely dispersed. Constant rotations are fraught with enormous risk, and infantrymen rarely emerge from cover. Russian assault units often seek to avoid contact with the enemy. Small Russian assault teams of two or three soldiers advance on foot, motorcycles, or ATVs, often taking advantage of fog or poor weather, which reduce the effectiveness of drones. If soldiers find an empty building or bunker in Ukrainian-controlled territory, they might wait there for several days until another Russian joins them, and then a third.
"In 10 days, five Russian soldiers were inside. That's it – they took up a position," says Roman Polischuk, deputy commander of the Ukrainian Lyutov brigade. A soldier spotted by a drone has little chance of survival. Even trenches offer little cover.
"If a drone detects an infantryman, it won't let him go," says the deputy battalion commander of Ukraine's 59th Assault Brigade, call sign "Prime."
Darkness also does not guarantee safety, as drones can be equipped with thermal imaging cameras.
Retreating from the battlefield can take days as drones hunt for prey. Soldiers take cover in tiny, camouflaged trenches—twos, threes, sometimes even just one.
"They cook food, sleep, and wait underground, emerging only occasionally, including to confront Russian saboteurs." However, few Ukrainian vehicles get that close to the front lines, and Ukrainian soldiers manning observation posts in the trenches rely on drones to fetch supplies. Reuters previously reported the story of Ukrainian soldier Sergei Krinitsky , who lived in a dugout on the front lines for 347 days.
The soldier noted that he was in the area of Chasov Yar from April 20, 2025, to March 31, 2026. He filmed a series of videos on his mobile phone, which he periodically charged using batteries salvaged from downed Russian drones. In his recordings, he depicted the inhumane conditions and absurdity of life in a cramped 3-by-4-meter dugout.
