Far beyond the lines in the Ukrainian steppes, Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers are launching drones to hunt Russian ships in the Black Sea – part of Ukraine's expanding campaign to isolate Crimea and weaken Moscow's military efforts. According to Reuters , such units have struck more than 180 vessels and other maritime targets around the peninsula over the past three weeks, opening a new front in the war.
"We work day and night, every day, without days off," the commander of the Ray battalion from the Ptahi Madyara brigade told the publication.
During a recent Reuters visit, his team launched drones every few minutes. Crimea, which serves as a transit and military hub for Moscow's forces, has become a new target for Ukrainian drones. In recent months, they have been targeting road and rail links in occupied southern Ukraine, connecting the peninsula with Russia. This has led to fuel shortages and the declaration of a state of emergency in Crimea, as well as systematic attacks on electricity and gas supply facilities.
And new attacks on oil tankers, bulk carriers, and other vessels indicate Kyiv's expanding efforts to pressure Russian forces by depriving them of resources.
The commander told Reuters the attacks were aimed at "debunking the myth" of Russian dominance and establishing full control over Ukraine's territorial waters.
Sidharth Kaushal, a senior fellow at the London-based think tank Royal United Services Institute, said Ukrainian strikes on Russian land logistics routes had led to an increase in maritime shipping through the Sea of Azov, which in turn created more targets for naval strikes.
According to him, these attacks are a "logical continuation" of the Ukrainian campaign in Crimea. The Ukrainian FP-1 and FP-2 drones used by Ray's team are an integral part of Kyiv's growing arsenal. They fly automatically to combat zones, after which pilots take control to deliver the final blow.
The launch pad is not reused, and teams are often sent to new locations within hours. Although technological advances allow drones to be launched from over 100 km behind the front lines, they remain a coveted target for enemy drone teams.
Panama, the squadron commander, said he and his comrades were encouraged by the "tangible results" of their operations.
"It's great that our pace is so high. But we still need to maintain it," he said.
Ukraine's strikes have been mirrored by intensifying Russian attacks on southern Ukraine, particularly the city of Odesa and ports that send much of the country's grain through a maritime corridor to international markets.
On Sunday, 10 sailors were killed after Russian forces struck a Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel carrying corn from the port of Odesa, Ukrainian officials said.
Last week, at least three people were killed in attacks on Odesa and Mykolaiv, another port city.
In the first two weeks of July alone, Russia struck Ukrainian ports 23 times and civilian vessels 17 times, Kyiv's seaports authority said last Thursday, leaving traders struggling with logistics headaches.
Agricultural exports such as grains and vegetable oils remain Ukraine's biggest source of foreign currency earnings, with more than 90% shipped from ports in the Odesa region through a maritime corridor.
Russia has said its attacks are aimed at infrastructure storing military cargo and fuel.
