Pakistan has sharply toughened its rhetoric toward Iran following Yemeni Houthi missile strikes on Saudi Arabia. According to Reuters, Islamabad has made it clear to Tehran that it views any attack on the kingdom as a threat to its own security and is prepared to fulfill its obligations under the mutual defense agreement.
According to a Pakistani official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the country's leadership has already conveyed its position to the Iranian side. He emphasized that an attack on Saudi Arabia would be a "red line" for Pakistan.
The escalation began after the Houthis launched missile strikes on Saudi Arabian territory, accusing Riyadh of attacking Sana'a airport. The exchange of fire marked the first serious violation of the four-year ceasefire between the two sides.
Islamabad is reportedly concerned that further escalation could draw the country into military conflict. Under a previously concluded defense agreement, Pakistan pledged to provide assistance to Saudi Arabia in the event of external aggression. Furthermore, thousands of Pakistani troops and air force units are already stationed in the kingdom.
Further concern is the potential disruption of shipping in the Red Sea, which is a vital trade route. Pakistani authorities fear that a wider conflict will negatively impact energy supplies and regional stability.
Recent events in Islamabad have also heightened concerns about the situation within Iran. According to sources, Pakistani leaders believe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' influence on decision-making in Tehran continues to grow, and the differences between the country's military and political leadership are becoming increasingly visible.
In recent months, Pakistan has increasingly projected itself as a diplomatic bridge in the Middle East, as it did between the US and Iran. Whether it will renew such a role to prevent the Saudi-Houthi confrontation from escalating further will now be of question. Particularly given its interest in avoiding instability along its western frontier and disruption to Gulf trade routes.
What compounds this problem though is Pakistan’s strategic commitments to Riyadh. The two countries share a close defence relationship under their Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, which dictates one to come for the aid of the other in times of military crises.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has already condemned the latest Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Kingdom’s security. However, whether that translates into direct military involvement remains uncertain. Pakistan has historically resisted joining Saudi-led combat operations in Yemen, citing the need to avoid deepening sectarian divisions and to preserve balanced ties with Iran.
Islamabad has spent years balancing close strategic ties with Saudi Arabia while maintaining workable relations with neighbouring Iran. That balancing act becomes significantly harder if Saudi-Houthi hostilities intensify. The existence of a recently signed Saudi-Pakistan mutual defence agreement adds an entirely new layer of complexity and raises difficult questions about how far Pakistan could be expected to go if Riyadh comes under sustained attack.
