The Russians may be trying to more actively conceal their aircraft after the strike on Engels , Ivan Stupak, a military expert and former employee of the Security Service of Ukraine, told.
Answering a question about how complex the destruction of the Russian Tu-95 in Engels was and whether we can expect other similar hits, he noted that we do not know what was used to do it or what methods were used.
"However, according to the SBU, the aircraft's tail section was torn off, and it will no longer operate. Furthermore, it was reported that it had repeatedly participated in massive shelling of Ukrainian territory. This means it will no longer operate," Stupak emphasized.
According to him, depending on how this operation was carried out, it will be possible to predict whether it can be scaled up:
"Because if, for example, it was a person who was nearby and launched a small missile at the plane, then we understand it was a one-off action. If it was something else, for example, our long-range missiles or long-range drones intercepted the plane during landing, takeoff, or while it was parked on the airstrip, then that's a completely different story."
At the same time, he says, this certainly would not have happened without the help of Ukraine's Western partners, whose intelligence services assist our country.
"Without this intelligence, without an understanding of what and where is located at a specific moment in time, unfortunately, we cannot conduct such operations independently," the former SBU officer noted.
When asked how many Tu-95s the Russians have and to what extent damage to this particular Tu-95 could impact the reduction in missile attacks, Stupak noted that no one can say how many aircraft remain.
"After the last strike—Operation Spiderweb, as reported—almost 41% of strategic aviation aircraft were withdrawn. How many remain is a difficult question, as some aircraft are simply sitting idle, being dismantled for spare parts. But overall, as experts say, the technology for repairing these aircraft has been lost forever. The Russian Federation has no capacity to repair these aircraft," he emphasized, adding that the number of aircraft is thus decreasing, and they cannot be repaired.
Stupak did not rule out that the Russians would begin to invent something new to protect their aircraft – certain structures or nets over the planes.
"I think they're capable of it. And they've already had a lot of open discussions about why there aren't any concrete structures, why there aren't any nets. A simpler option would be to move them as far away as possible, away from the front line... 1,500-1,600 kilometers," he said.
At the same time, the expert added, the Russians will determine their further actions depending on what exactly Ukraine used to launch such a strike.
"First, we need to understand what this threat is, and then we need to find a way to counter it. But, of course, this is good news for Friday. It means losing the aircraft and losing their ability to launch missiles at us," the military expert noted.
As reported earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Defense Forces successfully destroyed a Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber in Engels. Russia uses this type of aircraft to launch missile strikes against Ukraine. The head of state emphasized that the distance from the Ukrainian border to the destroyed aircraft was approximately 800 km.
In addition, the SBU reported that, according to preliminary data, the plane suffered critical damage – its tail section was completely torn off.
