The US military launched new airstrikes against Iranian military and strategic targets, including bridges in the south of the country. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing insider information, and confirmed by the Iranian Fars news agency. According to Fars, several bridges in the southern province of Hormozgan were damaged during the American strikes. Some of them were used to supply the city of Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz, home to a major Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps naval base. Furthermore, roads leading to Bandar Abbas were also reportedly damaged. The Wall Street Journal's military sources say the US military is attempting to block the naval base in Bandar Abbas by striking bridges in southern Iran to deprive it of supplies. This, along with strikes on other Iranian military installations, is expected to reduce the Iranian military's ability to attack merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. It is not yet known how extensively damaged the bridges in southern Iran are. According to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, highways connecting Bandar Abbas with other Iranian provinces have been closed. In response to the US military strikes on Iranian targets, the Iranian army attacked US military bases in the Persian Gulf. Iranian drones and missiles were shot down in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. Earlier, it was reported that the United States seriously damaged a railway bridge in Iran that plays an important role in trade between Russia and China. In turn, Israeli analyst Yigal Levin notes that the damaged bridge was part of the railway route from Tehran through Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan to the Russian Federation. Six months ago, the Institute for the Study of War wrote about Iranian activity to increase trade turnover along this route. "This was part of a larger campaign to establish an alternative network of trade routes with a number of neighboring countries that would not be dependent on international sanctions against Iran," the expert added.
Meanwhile, Reuters also reported that after the American strikes, explosions rocked Bushehr province, home to a Russian-built nuclear power plant. A local official later told state media that an American munition had struck the plant's outer perimeter. This perimeter had already been hit several times before the April 8 ceasefire.
A senior Iranian official, Mohsen Rezaei, said that Tehran is prepared to sharply escalate military action if the United States continues to strike the Islamic Republic.
According to Rezaei, within the next two to three days, Iran could abandon its current strategy of deterrence and countermeasures and move to a phase he called "offensive and total destruction." He asserts that in this case, American military bases and forces outside the US would become targets for direct strikes.
Moreover, the Iranian official said that Washington's strategy of combining military pressure with negotiations had allegedly reached a dead end and was no longer producing results.
Rezaei also warned that Tehran intends to increase the intensity of its attacks if the US military operation against Iran continues.
