Ukrainian military personnel carried out a unique operation, which is already being called the world's first combat landing of a ground robot from an unmanned naval vessel. During the mission, the robot landed on the occupied coast and then opened fire on the enemy with a remote-controlled machine gun, Forbes reports.

Video of the operation was published on July 13. The footage shows an unmanned boat approaching the shore, opening a ramp, and then a tracked unmanned ground vehicle driving ashore. After landing, the operator remotely fired the vehicle's machine gun.

The 123rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade stated that this is the first known combat operation of this type in the world.

"The unmanned ground vehicle was delivered to enemy shores by an unmanned sea platform, deployed in occupied territory, and used to carry out a combat mission," the military reported. The mission allegedly took place in the area of the Kinburn Spit, which Russian troops occupied back in 2022. This territory is of strategic importance, as it controls the entrance to the Dnieper-Bug Estuary and the approaches to the ports of Mykolaiv and Kherson. Russia uses the spit as a base for artillery, drones, radars, and electronic warfare systems.

Ukrainian forces have conducted raids there several times before, but this time they used robotic landing forces for the first time. Ukraine is rapidly increasing production of unmanned ground vehicles. While approximately 10,000 such vehicles were manufactured last year, the plan is to produce 50,000 by 2026.

At first they were used primarily for delivering ammunition and evacuating the wounded, but now they are increasingly performing combat missions.

One example is the DevDroid TW 12.7 robot, equipped with a heavy machine gun. According to the Ukrainian military, one of these systems independently held a forward position for 45 days, returning periodically only to refuel and reload. Analysts note that the current operation marks another step in the development of the concept of combined use of unmanned systems.

The unmanned naval craft effectively acted as a landing craft, delivering the combat robot to shore. The ground-based system could then conduct reconnaissance, check minefields, engage in combat, or distract the enemy without risking the lives of its troops.

Experts believe such operations could become a new standard in modern warfare. Robotic landings allow for testing enemy defenses, conducting raids, and supporting other units without the need to deploy personnel to the most dangerous coastal areas.

As a reminder, the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported on a unique operation they conducted on the Kinburn Spit. The military noted that this was the first known combat mission of this format in the world.

A Ukrainian robotic boat approached the shore of the occupied Kinburn Spit and launched an armed ground robot, which advanced inland and opened fire. Not a single soldier set foot on the shore.
