Ukrainian unmanned aerial forces have carried out one of the largest campaigns against an enemy fleet, the Financial Times reports.
Over the course of nine days—since July 6—drones have struck more than 110 Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov. As Thomas Alexa, a senior analyst at the maritime security agency Ambrey, noted, the number of ships struck in such a short period of time exceeded even the "tanker wars" between Iran and Iraq in the 1980s, when more than 450 attacks were recorded over seven years.
"I can't emphasize enough how unprecedented this is. We've never seen anything so concentrated on a global scale," he said. According to available data, drones struck 11 more Russian vessels last night alone—five tankers, five cargo ships, and one tugboat. The total number of targets struck rose to 116.
"The goal of the operation is to systematically disrupt the enemy's supply chain. Disabling tankers, cargo ships, and support vessels hinders the export of oil and petroleum products, limits maritime transport, and reduces the enemy's ability to supply fuel to its troops and the occupation force on the temporarily occupied Crimean Peninsula," the Unmanned Systems Forces reported.
According to the analyst, Ukrainian drones primarily target ships' accommodation blocks or pipelines used to transfer cargo into their holds. He described these as "very targeted" strikes, and the campaign is "potentially quite deadly." The attacks have already impacted the global grain market. According to Trading Economics, Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter, and wheat futures rose to a six-week high on July 10.
It's well known that approximately a quarter of Russian grain exports typically pass through the Azov Sea ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk, then through the Kerch Strait to the Black Sea. Kyiv has repeatedly accused Moscow of using this route to transport grain stolen from occupied Ukrainian territories.
Due to the scale of the attacks, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that grain exports would be rerouted away from the Sea of Azov. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called Ukraine's actions "terrorism."
"What the Ukrainian regime is doing isn't even piracy. Pirates at least steal and take something for themselves. But here, they're not taking anything for themselves or anyone else. They're simply causing damage and sowing fear," Lavrov said.
According to Robert Brovdi, commander of the Unmanned Systems Force, the attacks are also aimed at disrupting fuel supplies to civilians on the occupied Crimean Peninsula. Kyiv hopes to provoke an exodus from the peninsula, a popular summer destination for Russians. In response, Moscow has deployed a "record number of tankers" to Crimea to replenish fuel supplies. However, as Brovdi noted, Ukrainian drones are "working intensively to destroy Russia's shadow fleet in the Sea of Azov."
