With Russia's ground advance effectively at a standstill, and with hundreds and thousands of casualties for every kilometer of reoccupied land, the main battle is being waged in the skies . As columnist Sergei Schmemann writes in a column for The New York Times , this has become a decisive moment for both Ukraine and the West.
"The battle in the sky is not fought for territory: it is a grueling duel of attrition, destruction, and death, designed to undermine the enemy's ability and will to continue the fight," he wrote.
He recalled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent interview with the Ukrainian government, saying that in this battle, it's not so important whose territory is larger. What matters is that Ukraine possesses sufficient air defense assets to block Russian shelling. He believes that interceptors have replaced artillery shells as "an indispensable weapon for Ukraine in what could well become the final stage of this war." The funds for their purchase have been found, thanks to $80 billion in military aid from NATO. However, Ukraine faces competition from the US military and 16 other foreign customers seeking Patriot missiles.
Meanwhile, up to 600 are produced per year, while the US has used up about half of its 2,330 Patriot missiles in 39 days of active war with Iran. Therefore, even all the missiles produced will not be enough for Ukraine, as Russia produces only 60 Iskander missiles per month.
"This doesn't mean Ukraine is doomed. Quite the contrary. Ukrainians have demonstrated remarkable ingenuity in adapting to new forms of warfare, most notably in developing sophisticated, inexpensive, and lethal drones. Following the old adage of 'shoot the archer, not the arrow,' Ukraine is increasingly striking military-industrial facilities deep within Russia, with significant effect, as evidenced by Russia's recent ban on diesel fuel exports," the author writes.
He noted that Ukraine is winning what analysts call the "war of adaptation" against Russia. However, Putin, in his view, continues to believe in the power of artillery shelling. Furthermore, Ukraine is working with European partners to develop its own missile defense systems. He believes that this, along with granting Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missiles, will be "a signal to Putin that his time is rapidly running out."
As a reminder, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the war in Ukraine has entered a new phase . He noted that in recent months, the Defense Forces have achieved significant success, while Russia has made no significant territorial gains and is not achieving its stated goals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the "battle for the skies" would be decisive in an interview with the Financial Times. He asserted that victory at this stage would determine the outcome of the entire war with Russia. He also stated that the lack of air defense missiles is Ukraine's current weakness.
Meanwhile, Arsen Zhumadilov, head of the Defense Procurement Agency, recently announced that Ukraine is purchasing domestically produced anti-aircraft missiles for its air defense system . However, he did not specify whether these were new developments or modernizations of Soviet-era missiles.
