On Wednesday evening, the US military launched further strikes against Iran in response to Tuesday's attack on three cargo ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz . According to Reuters, the new round of strikes took place just hours after President Donald Trump declared that he believed the temporary ceasefire with Iran was "over."
"The United States has begun launching additional strikes against Iran to further degrade its ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," Central Command wrote on its website.
US Central Command reported on the second wave of intensive military operations, during which more than 90 Iranian targets were hit. The large-scale campaign has engulfed a wide range of military infrastructure along the Iranian coast. Coastal reconnaissance assets, air defense systems, naval bases, as well as key logistics hubs and warehouses storing missiles and drones, have been targeted. Over the past 24 hours, the number of targets has reached 80, which, combined with ongoing operations, demonstrates a consistent escalation of military pressure.
Commenting on the current situation, the command emphasized the readiness of its forces for future developments: "American forces remain vigilant, combat-ready, and ready to carry out operations as directed by the Commander-in-Chief."
At the moment, the American side regards these steps as necessary measures to ensure security in a strategically important region.
Iranian state media reported explosions heard in at least three port cities on the country's southeastern coast. Iran responded with attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain, where US military bases are located. According to state television IRIB, the actions were a response to recent attacks by American forces.
During the operation, the Iranian side deployed both missile systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. The targets targeted facilities that Tehran classifies as critical infrastructure. In Kuwait, the Arifjan and Ali al-Salem air bases were targeted, while in Bahrain, the Juffair and Sheikh Isa military bases were targeted.
The IRGC leadership accompanied the report on the attacks with a stern warning to Washington. Iran stated that these strikes were only the beginning and threatened to significantly expand the geography of military operations if the US continued its actions in the region.
Trump called the new American strikes "retaliation" for Iran's attacks on merchant ships. "If this happens again, it will be much worse!" he wrote on social media.
Earlier on Wednesday, during the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump was asked about the ceasefire with Iran. "I think it's over," he said, but added that he remained open to negotiations and did not expect a return to full-scale war.
Later, returning to the United States, Trump said Iran had approached him. "They called a while ago. They're very keen to make a deal," he said.
According to sources, Trump used one of the older presidential planes instead of the new one provided by Qatar as a precaution against renewed hostilities with Iran. The change was made at the insistence of the Secret Service. Wednesday's attacks have already led to a rise in oil prices: by 00:54 GMT, Brent crude futures had risen by approximately 1% to $78.80 per barrel. Despite this, prices remained significantly below their late-April peak of over $120 per barrel.
