The United States launched a series of strikes against Iranian targets in response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command or CENTCOM.

"U.S. Central Command has launched a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose a heavy price on it for targeting and attacking commercial vessels crewed by innocent civilians in international waters," the statement said.

They said the US strikes were in response to Iran's attacks on three commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

"The aggression demonstrated by Iran was unprovoked, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire," they added.

The US targets in the new strikes on Iran included air defense systems, coastal surveillance systems, air defense missile systems, anti-ship cruise missile sites, drone launch sites, and port infrastructure, a US official told Axios.

Iran's Press TV reported several explosions in the southern port city of Sirik. Strong explosions were also reported in Bandar Abbas and on Qeshm Island.

As reported by Axios , the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control has revoked the general license previously issued to Tehran under the Memorandum of Understanding. "As President Trump and his administration have repeatedly stated, the current memorandum of understanding with Iran is based entirely on the principle of compliance. Iran will benefit only if it demonstrates appropriate behavior. Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz were completely unacceptable to the United States and will have consequences. Our negotiators continue to work in good faith to reach a final agreement," the American official said.

The Ministry of Finance also clarified that new transactions will be prohibited starting July 7, but existing ones can be completed until July 17.

Iran immediately warned Washington that it would "take any measures it deems necessary," raising the risk of the temporary ceasefire agreement collapsing and once again threatening to drag the entire Middle East into a wider conflict. In Bahrain, home to the US Navy's 5th Fleet, missile warning sirens were sounded Wednesday morning after the US strike on Iran.

CENTCOM said the strikes were carried out "to punish those responsible for targeting and attacking civilian vessels crewed by innocent civilians in international waters." The US military, it was emphasized, "remains prepared to hold Iran accountable whenever the agreement is violated or not implemented." It was also stated that this series of strikes had ended.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry accused the United States of repeatedly violating the memorandum of understanding agreed upon between the parties and threatened retaliatory measures.

"The era of intimidation and blackmail is over," Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote in the 10th issue. "It leads nowhere. We will not give in."
