The commander of the Lasar's Group aerial reconnaissance crew of the National Guard of Ukraine, call sign "Dominic," spoke about a special operation during which Ukrainian troops managed to destroy 18 Russian tanks. Before carrying out the mission, the soldiers carefully planned the operation and spent a long time tracking the enemy armored vehicle routes.

The operation involved crews of Lasar's Group attack drones, as well as artillery units of allied forces.

Thanks to coordinated actions, every enemy tank was struck. Most of the occupiers' armored vehicles were destroyed. "And when we brought in artillery, our bombers, and all 18 tanks, you could say something hit each of them," said aerial reconnaissance commander "Dominic." Besides, unmanned systems units of the 81st separate airmobile brigade of the 7th airborne assault corps destroyed two Russian tanks and an ammunition depot in the Slavyansk direction. The enemy continues to accumulate and deploy its weapons in the 81st Brigade's area of responsibility and is also attempting to evacuate equipment damaged during unsuccessful mechanized assaults. Thanks to the coordinated work of aerial reconnaissance units and unmanned aerial systems, Ukrainian military personnel promptly detect and destroy enemy equipment entering the Slobozhansky paratroopers' kill zone.

Over the course of a week, fighters managed to destroy two units of heavy armored vehicles, as well as an ammunition depot belonging to the occupiers.

The brigade notes that the situation in the defensive zone remains challenging. In addition to attempts to advance with the support of heavy and light vehicles, the enemy is constantly attempting to penetrate the space between positions, amassing artillery and drones near temporarily occupied settlements, and continuing to strike and remotely mine logistics routes.

According to the open source WarSpotting database, Russia’s visually confirmed losses in Ukraine exceed 3,000 tanks, 8,000 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, and 1,000 artillery systems, alongside severe casualties among aircraft, helicopters, electronic warfare, naval assets, and logistics. While real losses are likely higher, this unprecedented post-Soviet destruction raises critical questions about Moscow’s ability to replenish and modernize its arsenal under wartime constraints.

However, these losses carry uneven strategic weight and industrial difficulty. Russia actively manufactures replacements for conventional equipment like tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and missiles. Conversely, many Soviet-era platforms are permanently out of production, though newer systems occasionally patch those gaps. Most critically, Russia cannot reproduce its most complex military systems at scale due to deep industrial, technological, and personnel limitations. These structural failures predate the war; the conflict simply exposed and accelerated decay that had been worsening long before 2022.

This article examines these distinct loss categories, evaluates Moscow’s replenishment options, and analyzes what this uneven recoverability reveals about the future limits of Russia’s military-industrial complex.
