Ukraine’s Security Service, SBU, says one of its Sea Baby naval drones struck the Blue, a tanker that is part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” during an operation in the Black Sea. According to the SBU, the attack took place on the morning of July 8 while the vessel was near Russian-occupied Yalta, within what Ukraine considers its exclusive economic zone. The agency said the naval drone hit the tanker’s stern, causing significant damage. It also claimed Russian aircraft attempted to intercept the drone but failed.
The SBU noted that the Blue is subject to sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Ukraine over its alleged role in transporting Russian oil in circumvention of international sanctions. The vessel is a Suezmax-class oil tanker capable of carrying large volumes of crude oil and petroleum products. Ukrainian officials described the strike as part of a broader campaign to undermine Russia’s military and economic capabilities by targeting vessels involved in the export of Russian oil. According to the SBU, revenues generated through the so-called shadow fleet help finance Moscow’s war effort against Ukraine. The agency further argued that, under its interpretation of international law and the laws of armed conflict, vessels used to support Russia’s wartime economy constitute legitimate military targets. The claims made by the SBU have not been independently verified, and Russian authorities had not immediately commented on the reported strike
