The Russian military command has begun evacuating air defense systems from the front lines in Ukraine to bolster Moscow's defenses. This decision was made following a successful Ukrainian drone attack on the Kapotnya oil refinery in Moscow, which supplies approximately 40% of the Russian capital's fuel needs, The Telegraph reports .
A new Pantsir anti-aircraft missile and gun system was installed on a special tower a few hundred meters from the plant, located just 16 kilometers from the Kremlin. Military analysts note that this move demonstrates the Russian Federation's top leadership's serious concern about the vulnerability of the capital's infrastructure, as even three air defense rings around the city are unable to stop Ukrainian airstrikes.
It has been recorded that the cockpit of the redeployed Pantsir is equipped with a protective metal mesh, which is typically used exclusively in combat zones to counter short-range attack drones. Furthermore, available satellite and photographic images show the system's launch containers are empty, indicating a probable shortage of interceptor missiles.
According to Ukrainian military officials, despite the presence of over a hundred anti-aircraft systems and approximately fifty mobile Pantsir systems in the Moscow region, the outdated Soviet air defense architecture was unprepared to counter massive air strikes and the use of long-range drone swarms.
A large-scale strike on the Kapotnya oil refinery resulted in significant damage to its storage tanks , and footage from the scene suggests that one of the neighboring air defense systems in the forest belt may have accidentally fired "friendly fire" at its own refinery.
Regular nighttime attacks have already forced the complete shutdown of Moscow's four main airports, and one drone previously exploded near an upscale residential building six kilometers from the city center. This situation is accompanied by the successful actions of Ukrainian hackers, who hacked Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin's official websites, posting calls for funding for Ukrainian drones.
It's worth noting that on June 19, the Russian capital was again attacked by Ukrainian drones . Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the alleged destruction of 37 drones as they approached the city, adding that emergency services were working at the debris sites. Despite the official's assurances that not a single drone had reached its target, Moscow residents began to widely share videos on social media showing drones flying directly over residential areas of the city.
In turn, Alexander Kovalenko, a military-political observer with the Information Resistance group, expressed the opinion that during the autumn-winter period, Ukrainian drones, as well as cruise and ballistic missiles, could demonstrate high effectiveness in striking strategic targets in the near and middle rear of the Russian Federation.
He explained this by the fact that Moscow lacks international support in the area of energy equipment supplies, and the only country capable of providing the Russians with the necessary assistance in solving potential energy supply problems remains China.
