North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has stressed his need for nuclear weapons at a meeting of his ruling Workers' Party, state media reported early Tuesday. The meeting took place on 20-22 June, according to the North's official Korean Central News Agency.
According to Associated Press North Korean media often report news a day or more after it happens.
"Kim Jong Un in his concluding speech reaffirmed the steadfast policy stand of our Party and state to beef up the national defence capabilities faster," KCNA said.
The KCNA report also said that "today, the world is witnessing rampant ultra-nationalism of modern version such as "America First" idea, Zionism, Ukrainian Neo-Nazism and Japanese militarism". It did not directly attribute this to Kim, but put the statement in the context of reporting his speech. The report also complained about America's alliance with South Korea and its war in the Middle East.
There were details too about the shuffle of senior officials. Former Premier Kim Jae Ryong seems to be moved out of powerful positions, and Kim Jong Un's former right hand man Jo Yong Won is back in the limelight after a few months where he was not seen so prominently.
Video from state broadcaster KRT showed Kim huddling on stage with Premier Pak Thae Song, seated on Kim's right. Jo Yong Won was on Kim's left.
