Senior officials from Azerbaijan and Armenia held a working meeting in Dilijan, Armenia, on 14 June to discuss issues related to the peace agenda between the two countries. The meeting brought together Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Armen Grigoryan, Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Armenia. The two sides discussed a range of matters connected to the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agenda. They underlined the importance of maintaining sustained bilateral dialogue as part of efforts aimed at promoting lasting peace and stability in the region.
The parties also exchanged views on confidence-building measures between the civil societies of the two countries. Hajiyev and Grigoryan agreed to maintain contacts at the working level and confirmed that the next meeting will take place in Azerbaijan. The meeting forms part of continuing direct contacts between Baku and Yerevan as both sides work to advance discussions on the peace process. In the post-war period, Azerbaijan has played a decisive role in shaping the new political realities that have emerged in the region. Azerbaijan’s successful military, political and diplomatic steps aimed at restoring its territorial integrity and sovereignty and ending the occupation have also compelled the Armenian political elite to seek new approaches. In this context, one of the main factors determining the election results was precisely the new realities that have emerged in the region and Azerbaijan and its leader, who are the architects of these realities. Drawing conclusions from the events of recent years, Armenian society has begun to understand more clearly that the normalization of relations with Azerbaijan and lasting peace have no alternative. It should be particularly noted that despite being the victorious side after the 44-day Patriotic War, it was Azerbaijan that came forward with a peace initiative. President Ilham Aliyev proposed the normalization of relations with Armenia in order to ensure lasting stability in the region and put forward basic principles based on the norms and principles of international law for this purpose. This approach demonstrated Azerbaijan’s intention to create a long-term environment of peace and cooperation in the region. It was precisely as a result of this policy that new opportunities for cooperation began to emerge in the region. The Armenian leadership also gradually came to understand that continuing a policy of confrontation did not serve the country’s development prospects and that the peace agenda was a more rational choice.
İn this case Türkiye’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan said that our greatest desire is for our region to be characterized not by conflicts, but by development projects, and not by division, but by shared prosperity initiatives. “We see the most hopeful manifestation of this vision today in the ongoing peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The political will demonstrated by the parties has opened a real window of opportunity for our region," said Türkiye’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan. "We support the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. We also desire the resolution of Azerbaijan's legitimate concerns and the signing of the peace agreement without delay. Rapprochement we are pursuing with Armenia also continues in close coordination with Azerbaijan. Significant progress has been achieved in this direction over the past four years," the Minister noted.
He emphasized that determined efforts are underway to build on this positive period, which serves the shared interests of the entire region.
