On the morning of May 29, in a courtroom in Xinxiang, Henan Province, 61-year-old Liu Yingcheng appeared before the court wearing a gray-blue prison uniform. His head was shaved, his hands were cuffed, and he sat in the defendant’s seat. Liu Yingcheng is better known by his monastic name, Shi Yongxin.
The once-famous “CEO monk” faced an extensive list of charges, including abuse of office for personal gain, embezzlement of institutional funds, accepting bribes, and offering bribes as a non-state public official. The case involved more than 300 million yuan in total. The court sentenced Shi Yongxin to 24 years in prison and imposed a 3.5 million yuan fine.
