At the concert "The People Come First," held at Beijing's Great Hall of the People on the evening of June 29, around 3,000 officials were in attendance. Yet when the cameras captured the moment Xi Jinping entered the venue, he was surrounded by layer upon layer of men dressed in black, forming what looked like an iron wall enclosing him at the center. Meanwhile, the entire front row was occupied by primary school students.
Even more striking was the reappearance of Cai Qi, who had been absent from public view for 12 days. He returned before the cameras wearing what could only be described as a grim, downcast expression. This was supposed to be a celebration marking the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party—a moment when Party members would be expected to celebrate together. So why was the venue guarded with security measures more reminiscent of a military base than a commemorative event?
