The US Department of Defense has transferred approximately 2,200 personnel of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, along with F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters to the Middle East in order to take control of strategic islands off Iran’s coast and increase pressure on Tehran as the war enters the third week. The Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials, that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has approved the deployment of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli to the region. The move marks the largest single troop movement from the Indo-Pacific to the Gulf since Operation Epic Fury began on February 28. The recent deployment removes the United States’ sole Marine unit that is stationed abroad on a permanent basis from its strategic post in the Western Pacific. This unit has long functioned as a key element of deterrence, countering Chinese military maneuvers near Taiwan and throughout the South China Sea. Currently, roughly 50,000 American service members are engaged in operations across the Middle East, and 13 personnel have lost their lives in combat. The move underscores that the confrontation with Iran has drawn upon US military resources far more heavily than Washington initially expected when the first military strikes against Tehran occurred two weeks ago. The Pentagon is planning to seize key points in the Strait of Hormuz - through which 20% of the world’s oil supply passes - particularly Iran’s coastal islands. This move is being considered a more effective “alternative lever of pressure” instead of directly bombing Iran’s oil infrastructure. Departing from Japan’s Sasebo port, the USS Tripoli, equipped with F-35B fighter jets, V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, and attack helicopters, is capable of both escorting ships at sea and carrying out rapid amphibious landing operations on land. Set against President Donald Trump’s assertion that military facilities on Kharg Island have been “entirely eliminated,” along with his remark that oil installations have so far been spared “in the interest of restraint,” the deployment of Marine forces to the area markedly raises the probability that these locations could be taken through ground operations. Although redirecting U.S. forces from Japan to the Middle East implies a weakening of military presence in the Indo-Pacific region, breaking Iran’s oil blockade is currently an absolute priority for Washington. Military experts believe that once the Marines reach Gulf waters in the coming days, the “Epic Fury” operation will enter a new and more dangerous phase involving direct ground combat.
