Ukraine deals heavy blow to Russia's Su-34 fighter-bomber fleet: most of them destroyed

Photographs taken during an air show in Novosibirsk show a newly completed Su-34 fighter-bomber , still wearing its factory gray primer. According to Defense Blog , this aircraft joins the steady stream of two-seater aircraft Russia is producing for its Air Force, even as the war in Ukraine continues.
"The aircraft was spotted at the Mochishche airfield in Novosibirsk during the 15th annual Viva Avia air festival, which took place on August 1 and 2 to mark the 110th anniversary of Russian naval aviation and the 95th anniversary of Russian military transport aviation. The aircraft was built at the Novosibirsk Aircraft Plant, known as NAZ or NAPO, the sole manufacturer of the Su-34, which is part of Russia's United Aviation Corporation," the report states.
According to production data, by the beginning of 2026, the Russian Air Force received 212 Su-34 aircraft built at the Novosibirsk plant, including seven prototypes and pre-production aircraft.
Meanwhile, the plant is expected to deliver 15 production aircraft in 2024, and another 18 in 2025. These production rates have remained relatively stable over the past several years, despite Western sanctions targeting the Russian defense industry.
"Oryx, an open-source group tracking visually confirmed losses of military equipment during the war, has recorded 43 Su-34 aircraft destroyed since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022; this figure only includes losses confirmed by photographic or video evidence and likely understates the true total," the publication added.
Analysts say Russia's current production rate—around 18 to 20 new aircraft per year—has lagged behind the confirmed rate of combat losses for long periods of the war.
"The Su-34, codenamed "Fullback" by NATO, is a twin-engine, two-seat fighter-bomber that replaced the aging Su-24 in Russian service. It was officially accepted into service with the Russian armed forces in March 2014 under a program that originated from a Soviet-era design contract signed in 1989," the article recalled.
The aircraft is equipped with an SH141 phased array antenna, an L-150 Pastel early warning radar receiver, and 12 hardpoints for weapons. It can also be refueled in flight and operate from airfields without ground support equipment thanks to its onboard auxiliary power unit.
The publication recalled that Russia actively used Su-34s during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, employing them to drop glider bombs on Ukrainian positions and cities from a safe distance, which kept the aircraft mostly out of range of Ukrainian air defenses.
"The continued production of these aircraft, even during wartime, has made this program one of the most closely monitored in open sources when assessing the size of Russia's defense industry," the publication concluded.
