New details have emerged about the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who served as Iran’s supreme leader for nearly four decades. According to a CNN report that has cited five people familiar with the matter, the CIA and Israeli intelligence had been secretly monitoring daily activities of the 87-year-old Khamenei for months and waited for the right moment to launch an attack to kill him. They were also watching Iran’s top political and military leadership, who typically avoided gathering in the same location as Khamenei. In recent days, however, they saw an opening. Senior Iranian figures, including Ali Khamenei, were scheduled to meet on Saturday morning at separate locations within a compound in Tehran that houses the ayatollah’s offices, the Iranian presidency and the country’s national security institutions. Since Khamenei was overly cautious during nighttime and let his down his guard during daylight, US and Israeli officials decided to adjust their plant for a night attack to a daytime assault. CNN referred to a note that the chief of staff of Israel’s military, Eyal Zamir, wrote to Israeli air force pilots. “On Saturday at dawn, Operation Roaring Lion begins. You are cleared to strike your targets. We’re making history. I trust you. Good luck to us all,” Zamir instructed the pilots, according to the report. At around 6 am in Israel, in broad daylight, Israeli warplanes struck the compound in the first phase of a coordinated wave of attacks carried out by the United States and Israel. According to sources, the aircraft were armed with high-precision munitions and long-range missiles, and the three locations within the complex where different leaders were present were hit at the same time. Hours later, Donald Trump announced that Ali Khamenei had been killed. In a social media post, Trump said Khamenei “was unable to evade our intelligence and highly sophisticated tracking systems,” adding that, working closely with Israel, there was nothing he or the other leaders killed alongside him could do. It remains unclear why Iran’s most senior officials, including the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the defense minister, gathered in central Tehran near Khamenei at a time when the United States had already deployed significant military forces in the region following Trump’s warnings of possible strikes. Israeli intelligence had identified several of Khamenei’s top advisers at the site, including Aziz Nasirzadeh, Ali Shamkhani, Mohammad Shirazi, Mohammad Pakpour, and Seyyed Majid Mousavi, among others. It was also uncertain who would succeed them. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the aftermath, the operation highlighted how deeply Israeli and American intelligence networks had developed inside Iran in recent months and how quickly both countries were ready to act once an opportunity emerged. An Israeli military official said Israel routinely tracks the leaders of its main adversaries, but operations of this scale require especially detailed intelligence and the coordination of multiple complex elements.
