From football weekends to Thanksgiving dinner,
Ackett's Handmade Pie Company has
something delicious for every occasion.
And joining us this morning, we have the owner, Zach Ackett.
Welcome.
Welcome.
Thank you.
How easy is it to make a pie?
Is it a difficult process, a challenging process?
It's not really listed as the easy thing to do, you know, on the list.
It's actually quite difficult.
But once you learn how to make it, it's pretty easy.
So the repetitions help you out.
And yet, we're making it this morning.
Yeah.
Exactly.
We're making hand pies though.
What's a hand pie?
If people are like-
I mean-
These guys?
There are these out in front.
A hand pie is literally self explanatory.
It's-
Pick it up, eat it with your hand.
I like that.
Pretty simple.
And smart, too, because folks want pie on the go.
They can just shove it in their face.
That's great.
You can get a whole box of them for parties, for Super Bowl,
whatever you're doing.
You can kind of just, instead of cutting a bunch of pies.
Yeah, because some people have a sweet tooth.
They want the wings, but they also want something sweet
to go with the wings.
You were right.
Yes, Lori.
All right.
Let's do this.
How do we make it?
So yeah, we're kind of throwing these together.
We're doing it a little differently than the way
we present them in our store.
OK.
But you can still do that at home.
So these are pie dough discs,
you can buy them as a two pack at our store.
So you have them, you thaw them out,
you roll them out, and add a little bit of flour.
You take your pie filling,
you can make it with whatever you want or buy some from us.
You're going to scoop, I don't know,
a decent amount, kind of more center but over to the
side.
Because we're going to fold this over.
So pick a side?
Yeah, put most of it
All of it, or just, or no?
Put most of it?
Yeah, a little bit more.
Okay.
Probably, Lori, most of your cup.
A little bit more for you, Jamie.
That's all I got.
So just do all of it.
Just have fun with it.
You're probably fine.
It'll all fit.
And then from there, we're going to fold
this over like a little calzone.
These are like the old Hostess hand pie style shapes.
So you're going to come back to that.
Oh, fold it all the way over.
Yep, all the way over so you're kind of making a half moon.
Okay.
Okay.
And then you're going to kind of lightly put
your hands around it to kind of push that air out.
Mine's bleeding.
That's okay.
Sometimes we bleed.
That's fine.
And then so yeah, you kind of s-
So then you're going to have this little half moon, little pocket here.
You'll take your fork, your dough cutter, whatever you have at home.
It's not Sur La Table, I don't have to sell you on this.
And you're going to just run either that around,
or you're going to crimp that edge with that fork.
So crimp, okay.
Flat, yeah.
Follow Lori, she's got it.
Oh, follow Lori.
She's going to push down and pull.
Jamie, how about I help you?
Like boom?
Boom, and pull it out.
Oh.
Okay, come on.
You can always dab a little flour if you have that at home.
Ta-da!
Yeah.
Perfect.
Come on, Lori.
Are you a pie-making pro?
No, really.
And you can do this with savory.
I like to eat them.
You can do it with sweet.
You can put anything you want inside a pie filling.
That's why it's so awesome and fun.
Indeed.
What do you like about making pies?
Is it relaxing?
Is it tedious?
Push, push, push.
It makes money.
Just kidding.
I'm kidding.
That was a good answer.
No, no, no.
Hey, it is what it is.
I love making pies.
I like the pie dough.
I like making pie dough.
It's really the hardest part, but once you get it...
Dough from the dough.
So if it's sticking like this, just add more flour?
Yeah, if you dip your fork in a little bit of flour,
water would actually...
You can pull your fork away from it instead of up,
so it kind of grooves it all together.
Oh, okay.
I've been doing this the hard way this entire time.
Oh, my God.
Bad teacher.
Okay.
Wait, I'll do that.
And that just helps to kind of pinch everything together.
It's pinched.
I'm pinched.
And then you put some sugar on it, some water,
put a couple holes in it, slap it in the oven.
Pull it out, you know, about 400 for about
a half an hour, you're ready to go.
Nice.
We have some pies in front of us I'd like to try.
And that's the thing.
If you don't want to make it at home, we got it for you.
So we have cherry on the left,
and then we have chicken pot pie on the right.
I'm going to go for the chicken pot pie.
Whatever kind of teeth you have, if it's sweet or savory.
I'm both, actually, but I guess I will.
What's in the chicken one?
It's pretty classic.
Potatoes, carrots, onions, lots of chicken,
it's like a pot pie in a hand.
I buy this from you all the time.
Oh, thank you.
And what's great about kind of the blend
is we have Thanksgiving coming up.
For us, it always feels like it's here.
For the average person, it starts in November,
so you can get your pre-orders in.
We have nine stores, Metro Detroit.
You can choose from your classic pumpkin, apple,
then we have some other different flavors
like our Autumn Harvest, Michigan Four Berry,
and if you want to add another thing to your
Thanksgiving table.
Grab a pot pie.
Really quickly, what's the number one selling pie for Thanksgiving?
Michigan four-berry.
Okay.
All right.
Get your eyes.
Four-berry apple.
You don't have to make the pies.
You can just go and buy them from the markets.
There you go.
Listen, we'll post this on our website at foxdetroit.com.
Good morning, Ingrid.
