If you drive along Second Avenue, you might see and hear
this noisy construction that spans several blocks affecting businesses,
profitability and neighbors ability to get to sleep at night.
New York is a noisy city, but in East Harlem,
neighbors say each day has gotten louder and louder.
It's pretty hectic.
Every day there's something new going on with construction.
This second phase started in June.
It's funded by a federal grant, and when finished the
Second Avenue subway line will extend all
the way to 125th Street, bringing much needed
transit options to Harlem,
making commuting to and from the neighborhood easier.
But in the meantime,
some neighbors complain construction goes on at all hours.
And business owners like Roland Watson running Mama's Restaurant.
Say it's impacting profitability.
It absolutely is affecting my bottom line.
Absolutely, you know.
Although Roland was clear,
workers coming in for a bite does help out.
A lot of the traffic that used to come in,
I'm unable to get.
At the same time, I don't want to be hypocritical
because the guys do come in and support,
but it doesn't make up for the foot traffic
that I'm actually missing.
An MTA spokesperson says
they're trying to avoid overnight work and minimize noise,
but acknowledges crews have had to work late,
Into the night or in the morning within allowable noise limits
to reduce the impact on school bus routes around 110th Street
as operations drone on East Harlem eagerly awaits a project complete.
The MTA says it is working to restore streets and sidewalks around here
so neighbors should feel some relief pretty soon.
They add that they're in it for the long haul.
The project extends until 2032,
although the noisiest part of the work should end by 2027.
