Every case on this show has a version that everybody knows.
But we tell the one that the evidence supports.
A killer who wrote to the newspapers and a symbol that outlived him.
Six real murders that became the opening scene
of a supernatural franchise.
A tiny evidence bank and a family finally willing to talk.
Thirteen stolen artworks, frames still empty.
Two junior employees who said a nine billion dollar company was lying.
No fund, no trades, one locked door.
More than 900 lives lost and a phrase we still use without thinking.
A crime of the century and a conviction still questioned today.
We don't sell the myth.
We don't give the criminal the last word.
We follow the evidence to the people it belongs to.

Good evening. Tonight on the Capitol Report,
Russian and Ukrainian officials welcoming a temporary ceasefire
brokered by the First Lady of the United States.
Could it be a stepping stone toward lasting peace in the region?
I think it's great.
I think she's doing a great job,
and I think we're going to be very close to settling Russia-Ukraine.
And Vice President J.D. Vance weighing
in on what went wrong for Republicans in the midterms,
what he and others are saying the GOP needs to change.
This is Capitol Report,
live from our global headquarters
in our nation's capital.
Here's Steve Lance.
Good evening, President Trump telling NTD inside the Oval Office
that a lot of things are in the works to preserve his legacy,
hinting at upcoming actions on tariffs.
He also warns that Democratic Socialists now elected to lead
Los Angeles and D.C. will hurt those cities in the long term.
Joining us now live is NTD's White House correspondent, Iris Tao.
Good evening, Iris. What did the president tell you today?
Good evening to you as well, Steve.
So despite the prospect of Democratic-controlled
Congress for the next two years,
the president today telling NTD that a lot of things are in the works
and cooking for the next week
to protect his legacy, including his tariff policy.
How else do you plan to preserve your legacy
in the next two years and onward?
So we're going to do a lot of things.
You'll be seeing a lot of things over the next week.
Two weeks, we had a lot of things cooking, and we took the tariffs off,
you know, every, right, we're building over 3,000 factories right now,
every factory would come to an immediate halt.
And Steve has another part of his efforts to protect what he's done.
He signed a new executive order to designate the White House's
Oval Office as well as the Cabinet Room as national monuments,
meaning that no major changes can be made
to them unless there's congressional approval.
And he also touted to NTD what he calls
the many accomplishments for the past two years,
including no tax on tips and his policies to cut taxes from the big,
beautiful bill, as well as the record on the border.
But he's also issuing a new warning as Democratic Socialists
are now elected to lead both D.C. as well as Los Angeles.
They will be joining New York City's Mom Donnie,
making three major cities now to be led by Democratic Socialist mayors.
The president telling NTD that it will be a disaster.
Three major cities are going to be led by democratic socialists.
There'll be change but unfortunately usually that happens
so late that you'll never be able to bring
back a city or a country or a state.
They're very tough on a city, a state,
or a country.
That's been proven over a thousand years with different names
And on the stock market,
as the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 suffer their biggest losses on record,
a thousand years
with different names here.
the president tonight saying that that's due
to Democrats' wins in the midterm election.
The president, though, telling Americans,
do not fear as things will come back stronger.
Back to you.
So, Iris, the president today
also revealing to you some potentially major progress
on the Russia-Ukraine peace deal front.
Tell us more.
Sure. So President Trump telling NTD today that we could
be very close to a settlement between Russia and Ukraine.
Now, this comes just days before trilateral meetings planned
for next week in Abu Dhabi, among the three countries,
as well as as Melania Trump, the first lady today, brought
together Russian and Ukrainian officials here at the White House
as they celebrated a temporary ceasefire
in the Russian-controlled city of Oleshki.
Here's what the president said about how that meeting.
Do you see that as a stepping stone for a larger peace deal?
How close are we to that?
I do.
I do.
I think it's great.
I think she did a great job.
And we're, I think we're going to be very
close to settling Russia-Ukraine.
It's going to be a very big,
it's going to involve more than Ukraine, and I could even
say it might involve all of Europe.
And as we might be inching closer to a peace deal,
President Trump's top diplomat today
says he loves his job and is not going anywhere.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a new interview today,
dismisses reports about him potentially
leaving the administration,
saying that it's always been his intention to stay until the
end of President Trump's term.
Iris Tao, live from the White House.
Thank you, Iris.
And Democratic turnout reaching record highs this midterm cycle.
Joining us now to discuss Tim Golding,
Americans for Prosperity Actions Senior Advisor for Michigan.
Tim, great to have you with us.
So what drove this surge in voter turnout
in this particular midterm cycle, in your opinion?
Cost of living, I think, was the biggest driver.
People are tired of paying more at the gas pump.
They're tired of paying more for bacon and eggs.
You know, they used to be able to buy both.
Now they can buy one or the other.
And that was a big driving change.
The voters in Michigan are tired, or were tired,
as it showed on the election night,
of this Republican status quo.
They want action.
They want things done.
And they didn't feel
that things had been done in the last two years that would make
their cost of living easier, their way of life easier,
and they rejected the Republican
ticket.
Do you see a path to reaching that through
the Democratic platform, obviously,
combined with a president that has veto power?
As well as the Trump administration saying that it's lowering costs,
but economic change takes
time. So did voters run out of patience?
Is this a product of that? Or did Republicans
fail to get their economic message across?
I think it was both. I mean, you had the
president and other leaders for a long time
this year talking that the economy was great.
Everyone was doing fine when people weren't.
And we heard it every day at the doors. We were
The cost of living was just too high.
It does take a long time to dig out from underneath
the Biden era inflation and COVID and all those different things.
Those things are still lingering
on. But the Republican Party did not help itself by reckless wars
and tariffs that need to end.
That just didn't do well, didn't bode well for people.
The reckless war, you know, the thing in Iran not being wrapped up
in a timely fashion like the president promised makes
the cost of fuel go up and people can't afford to fill
their cars with gas to get to work. It's a real issue.
And the Republicans didn't deliver like they promised to do.
And they were rejected at the polls.
And if the Democrats change that in the next two years.
Working with the president, great.
But if they don't, we'll hold them accountable and we'll
replace them in 2028 with Republicans
who can get the job done or want to get the job done.
Now, what does Abdul
Al-Sayed's senator-elect representing Michigan, what does his win
say about how Michigan voters feel
and what could it mean for the people of Michigan?
Well, he's certainly an interesting character.
You know, he was running on socialist policies and platforms,
but the Michigan voters were
not voting for socialism.
They were not voting for government control of health care,
nationalized energy, rent
control.
They weren't voting for any of that.
They did not.
Michigan families, American families don't want socialism.
A very large percentage of people want free markets
and small businesses to thrive.
They were voting for a change.
Again, they wanted to send a message to the Republican Party.
The status quo wasn't getting it done.
It's still too expensive for us to live.
It's too expensive for us to have a business, to make things ends meet.
And they didn't do enough to show the American families,
Michigan families, that they were
working hard enough for them.
And they want the Democrats to have a crack at it now.
And if they don't, we're going to hold them accountable.
President, just saying on Truth Social,
the stock market crashed today because the, as he puts it,
Democrats had a big Tuesday.
So sad to see you only have yourselves to blame,
President Donald J. Trump. Your reaction?
Well, I wish we could stop with the identity politics
and the name calling and all those different things
on both sides of the aisle. That needs
to stop. We need to get back to working on policies
and things out for American families.
The stock market did react accordingly, too,
and maybe it was 100% because of the Democrats
having as many wins as they did,
and their thoughts on AI and different things and investments
may be stopping.
There probably is a correlation there somewhere,
but at the end of the day, we need to stop,
again, the name-calling, the picking on one another,
the hatred, the division.
A lot of the people we talked to in Michigan at the doors,
we knocked on over 900,000 doors
This election cycle.
One of the big things they talk about is civility in politics.
They want politicians that go to Washington to get things done
and stop fighting and bickering
one another, work across the aisle
and get things done that make American families and
businesses thrive and prosperous again.
Tim Golding, appreciate you joining us.
Thank you.
Republicans are now speaking out about what went wrong after
the major midterm defeat.
Joining us now to discuss Audie Bushell, Democratic strategist,
former South Carolina City Councilwoman,
and Mark Meckler, president of the Convention of States Foundation,
America First Policy Actions senior advisor for Michigan.
Great to have you both with us.
So, Vice President Vance posting a long message
on X explaining why Republicans lost the midterms.
He listed four reasons, one of them saying end the war.
Focus on cost of living, inflation,
put America first, change our relationship to Israel.
Our voters showed up,
and the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats.
That's the vice president there saying
that in the post-mortem assessment.
Audie, Republicans have taken big losses before, including in 2020.
What do Democrats need to do in the next two years
to deliver for their voters?
Well, I think exactly what you just said.
Yes, 2020, we had some great gains,
but we haven't seen this historic nature of states that have flipped.
For the first time in decades, like my home state,
where we have our first Democratic senator for the first time
in 28 years, since probably the Obama era.
And I think what makes this point in time the most distinctive
and the most crucial is that people didn't vote them in just
because they were Democrats.
They voted them in because they had practical solutions
for problems that everyday Americans were facing,
especially in red states like Texas and South Carolina.
And so over the next two years.
Democrats need to be focused on delivering,
being able to show exactly how they made people's lives better,
less of the performative, you know, statement releasing, tweet sending.
And I think you see that even with some of the super left end
of the party already starting to have opinions about the potential
leadership for the House Democrats and the Senate Democrats.
But regardless, it's been very much a populist movement.
And you've also seen the generational tides turn.
And so I think that that's what you need to focus on.
This is a different era of Democrats,
and they have to focus on delivering, not just
talking politics.
Now Mark, Vice President Vance ended his post
by urging frustrated Republicans to back candidates
who share their values.
What is your post-mortem assessment and what do Republicans need to do
to recalibrate and claw back the confidence of many voters?
Look, I think this was not a yes election.
This was a no election. I think voters were
incredibly frustrated.
Republicans promised a lot and delivered little. They promised
affordability. They promised secure elections.
They promised to put America first. And we didn't
see these policies in action. We saw tariffs.
I'm actually surprised to see the president talking
about tariffs in the Oval Office today.
Those raise the cost of living on everyone. It is what
I can argue whether they're good or bad,
but they raise the cost of living.
And so we just saw Republicans not deliver for the American people.
We saw actually a lot of
Republicans vote for Democrats
because they were just fed up with Republicans. And I actually think
it's much more simple. I think the formula is affordability.
If Republicans want to return
prosperity to the American people,
they have to do the hard work and actually return prosperity
or they're not going to win again. Mark, just a quick follow-up. How do
you think the GOP is going to manage the lame duck session?
Well, there's a question versus should or how will they?
What I think they should
do is they should ram through every single piece of their agenda that
they have failed to do. They should make housing more affordable,
medical costs more transparent,
free up the meatpacking industry
so that it's not a cartel anymore to bring down grocery prices.
They should end the war in Iran immediately.
President Trump should do that. We should get
out of there and let them handle their own neighborhood,
all the things that he promised.
And I would say in the Senate, they should end the filibuster.
The Democrats have said over and over,
Vast majority of them who are running for office,
but they will end the filibuster
as soon as they take power.
So I think Republicans should do that right now,
ram through a Republican agenda, and
then President Trump should, you know,
any attempt to change that, and then let the record
stand for itself.
I think the economy will roar,
the people will thrive, and I think Republicans would
take power again in 2028.
Oddly, Florida notably resisted some of the blue wave.
Governor Ron DeSantis has been very public about
his views on the Republican losses.
Here's what he had to say.
Why haven't we done immigration?
Shut off H-1B visas.
Why haven't we codified Trump's immigration executive orders?
Why haven't we stripped jurisdiction
from the federal courts over deportation cases?
There's so many things that could have been done.
They didn't even attempt it, Laura.
So, oddly, Florida obviously staving off that blue wave
to a certain degree with Republicans keeping
their congressional seats in their state legislature.
Why do you think Democrats were not able to perform
as well in Florida as they did in other states,
including your home state of South Carolina?
Well, a couple of things.
When it came to South Carolina, we have always been notoriously
stubborn about not being told what to do,
whether that's Democrats or Republicans.
And what you saw was a lot of Republicans that were upset that the,
you know, late Senator Graham's
sister was essentially being anointed to the seat.
And they felt that there were a lot more
capable candidates that would represent their values.
And that was something that Senator
Senator Annie Andrews was able to capitalize off of that and she had
You know, 17 months between also the death of Senator Graham
to continue to campaign and build those inroads.
And so I think that was a big factor of why we
were able to flip that seat in Florida.
You know, while Governor DeSantis is coming on and saying,
you know, why didn't we do X, Y, Z with Trump's agenda?
He successfully, after his presidential run,
very much separated himself from a lot of the national MAGA movement
and focused on Florida.
And I think that's been key for whether it's the blue wave
or the red wave is candidates that actually remember you're
not representing the swamp in Washington.
You're representing your state,
which is going to be very different by state.
That is really where I think Florida did well.
They focused on their people.
And so you saw a lot of incumbents still win.
And you also saw a lot, you know,
the first, I think, black governor that.
Has ever been elected in the state.
And a lot of that was a reflection
of really being focused on the state.
Mark, something interesting took place.
A lot of conservative ballot measures passed
in states that flipped to Democrats.
For instance, Kansas.
Are conservative voters really moving left?
Or are they punishing Republicans
for not delivering on conservative issues?
Okay, I think you nailed it.
This is why I say this was a no election, not a yes election.
If you look on the issues, the voters still support Republicans.
Look at those ballot
initiatives. They supported conservative Republican ideas.
They are punishing Republicans
for not delivering on those ideas.
Going back to Florida, the reason that Ron DeSantis won and was
so successful is because he's a good governor.
He's a good executive. He delivered on the ideas
that he promised in that state.
And it proves that good governance matters.
Honestly, it matters more than sort of the fringe policy,
social stuff at the edges.
Ron DeSantis turns the lights on within 24 hours
when there's a hurricane.
People care about that a lot more than what's
the abortion policy in the state.
As of now, the outcome of Alaska, that Senate race there,
still unclear. It's razor thin. There
was some controversy around it.
President Trump today weighing in on that controversy surrounding
the ballot stacking to NTD's Iris Tao. Let's have a quick listen.
So they cheated on thousands of votes.
Everyone knows it's a cheat. And they should be mandated
to take the fake Dan Sullivan's votes
and the other person they put in it and give it to the
real Dan Sullivan.
And when that happens, he wins by thousands of votes.
Additionally, Alaska uses ranked choice voting,
which can be complicated for voters to navigate.
Does this system create opportunities
for spoiler candidates to influence the
outcome of the election?
So I think that any type of, you know,
voting system is going to have pros and cons.
There is actually an initiative here in South Carolina
to get rid of straight ticket voting
because, I mean, I even have come onto your show and said,
I don't know if Annie Andrews
is going to win because we have straight ticket voting.
But what we saw is regardless of the voting.
You're going to see voter behavior change based
on the environment that's around them.
I think it's unfair to say that it's a fake person
because it is another real person that has the same name.
Whether or not he was recruited,
I haven't been following close enough to make that.
You know, decision. But I will say that it is going to always be a pro
and con. We are still
a two party system, which makes it difficult
for people that have viewpoints on both sides of the
aisle or slightly more extreme than both parties
to be able to be a viable candidate. And that's
where I think Democrats this cycle did a very good job
of falling in line for the first time since,
again, 2008, in my experience.
And I attribute that to millennials that said,
hey, we're the big tent party and we're going to
accept people with different religious backgrounds
and people that may be DSA, may not be DSA.
And that's exactly what I think will continue
to be our successful formula for 2028.
Now, Mark, it appears as though the DOJ
is escalating its investigation into this matter.
How might this investigation affect
the certification process in Alaska?
Well, it should. And one of the things
that's really driving me crazy is I'm hearing a lot
of Democrats saying, well, we know it's bad.
We know it was dishonest. We know this guy wasn't
a real candidate. We now know for sure
the documents are out there that he was sought
out because his name was Dan Sullivan.
They were searching for that all over the state.
We know that the Democratic Campaign Committee was involved in this.
We know that Mary Peltola's campaign was involved in it.
Whether it's legally cheating or not,
we all know it's bad and it's dishonest.
And we actually know nobody voted for that guy for real
because nobody knew who he was.
He didn't campaign.
Nobody could identify his photo.
And he disappeared.
I mean, he has literally now just completely disappeared.
They've tried to find him.
He's gone.
He's not a real candidate.
That's cheating by any measure.
And any Democrat that would support that should
be embarrassed for themselves for supporting that.
Everybody in the country should call for clean elections.
And that means that you don't put a spoiler candidate
on the ballot in order to make people.
Ida B. Wells, Mark Meckler,
greatly appreciate both coming on. Thank you.
Voters across the country weighing
in on more than 100 ballot measures in this year's midterm
elections. Among the biggest issues, abortion,
voter ID, and gun rights. The results were mixed
with voters in some states moving in opposite directions.
Let's take a closer look.
Voters in several states made their voices heard
on some of the country's most divisive issues,
and the results weren't all pointing in the same direction.
On abortion, voters in three states backed measures protecting access.
Virginia and Nevada approved constitutional
protections for abortion rights.
And in Missouri, voters rejected a Republican-backed measure
that would have ended protections approved by voters two years ago.
But in Idaho, voters rejected a proposal that would have established
a statutory right to abortion up to about 24 weeks,
which is when the fetus would be capable of living after birth.
The results were also divided on voter identification or voter ID.
Voters in Ohio, North Carolina, and Nevada approved
measures strengthening photo ID requirements for voting.
But voters in California and Colorado rejected proposals
to add identification requirements for mail-in ballots.
In Massachusetts, voters approved a proposal that would allow
eligible citizens to register at their polling place on Election Day.
Several states also approved measures reaffirming
that only U.S. citizens can vote in state elections,
a requirement already in place for federal elections.
And on to gun rights.
Arkansas voters approved a constitutional amendment
declaring gun ownership a fundamental individual right.
And in Idaho, voters chose the Winchester Model 1873
as the state's preferred gun.
A symbolic vote that does not change the state's gun laws.
But in Massachusetts,
voters decided to keep their state's restrictions on gun ownership,
such as penalties for owning so-called ghost guns.
All of the results show voters were willing to weigh
in directly on major political and cultural issues.
But their decisions depended on the state
and the question in front of them.
The latest in the Chinese Communist Party's
influence operations right here on U.S. soil.
A recent report finding China is using social media
to pose as Americans and spread divisive
political content operating just ahead of the midterm elections.
NBC's Washington correspondent, Jack Bradley, has the details.
The Chinese Communist Party is behind an effort
to repurpose established media accounts
to amplify politically divisive content.
That's according to a recent report
by online intelligence firm Graphika.
So with China, thousands of...
Fake accounts, personas that seed or generate or post content.
And then there's a second wave of fake accounts that come along
and amplify that content,
try and boost it.
Accounts with tens of thousands of followers,
targeting critics of the Chinese Communist Party,
Chinese dissidents, and Falun Gong.
A spiritual practice brutally persecuted in China.
Those same accounts now amplifying posts about U.S. immigration,
mass shootings, and election integrity.
Repurposed to sow political division in the U.S.
One account, Coolture, with over 200,000 followers,
once posted about Filipino food and culture.
But after going silent for two years,
it returned with pro-Beijing messaging, then to U.S. politics,
circulating content both supporting and criticizing President Trump.
X has since suspended the account this week.
And this influence operation spreads
across numerous social media platforms.
Both of them were using ChatGPT to generate content,
which was then posted on social media by accounts posing as Americans.
And both of them in their own ways were trying
to jump on existing debates in the U.S.
And if you like, give them a bit
of a CCP steer to steer them in a direction
which might be in line with CCP strategic objectives.
In 2023, Meta removed thousands of accounts
and pages associated with this network
spreading pro-Beijing narratives and targeting critics of the CCP.

Authorities taking nearly 400 truck drivers
off the road during an operation in Arkansas.
It's the latest in a federal crackdown on unsafe
and unqualified commercial drivers.
Entity correspondent Jason Blair has more.
In a two-day Arkansas operation, 393 commercial truck drivers
were taken out of service by the Department of Transportation.
The department says that almost half were not proficient in English,
something Secretary Duffy has said is an ongoing issue.
You have to speak English to operate a commercial motor vehicle.
I didn't create that rule. President Trump didn't create that rule.
That rule has been in place for decades. We have schools.
that know the rule and still pass people through their school
who can't speak the language.
Out of the 393, officers
also referred 74 people to federal immigration enforcement
and 44 people were arrested on criminal charges.
With the announcement, Duffy said,
gone are the days of dangerous and many times illegal
and foreign drivers putting American
lives at risk on our roads.
Under the Trump administration, we are restoring law and order.
Officers ran checks at weigh stations along Arkansas highways
and freight corridors.
They did more than 1,700 inspections from October 27th to October 29th.
This effort is the third wave of Operation Highway Shield.
The first wave took 176 drivers out of service in Florida.
The second wave covered Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
and Ohio and took 766 drivers and vehicles out of service.
Jason Blair, Entity News.
And with Democrats sweeping both the House
and the Senate in the midterms,
how are everyday Americans reacting to the results?
And what should the next Congress
be prioritizing? NTD Sam Wong was out
in the National Mall right here in DC to hear from the
people. What was your reaction to the results?
Did it surprise you? Not necessarily. I mean,
I was kind of expecting things to go a little bit different. People are
They want everything to change right away
and sometimes things don't change right away.
I think from the media blitz,
I expected it to go exactly the way it did.
I'm definitely not surprised that there
was a blue wave and I'm very excited for
what the future holds with that.
I think it does show, like it goes to show,
People's sort of attitudes towards where we are now in America.
Usually whoever's in power,
the other party takes control on the midterms.
It almost always happens that way. So I did expect it.
Did I like it? No, but I expected it.
I've watched what's been happening
with the Republican Party for a long time
and they've lost their way. You get the feeling that
The Republican Party would rather lose than allow
the MAGA movement to continue on where it is,
and not knowing that there is a greater spiritual and cultural movement
that is rapidly growing in this country.
One of the things that a lot of people
are talking about is affordability, right? Do you think
the Democrats, once they get control
of Congress, do you think they're going to
effectively address this issue?
I think it'll definitely take time,
like for anyone to get a hold of how our economy is
right now, like it's going to take time to do.
No, of course not. All they do is raise taxes and
have silly ideas. So this would all be ashes if Iran had nuked us.
So, you have no choice to go to war?
Oh, they'll try to address it,
but the solution that they're going to offer
is not going to make it better,
it's going to make it worse.
More government spending, more government programs
is not going to reduce the affordability crisis
because it's all about the debt.
What should the next Congress prioritize?
I think right now, security, every country's got their own border.
Not everybody's allowing everybody to just, you know, filter right in.
What they'll end up prioritizing
is our investigations and impeachments.
They'll be engrossed in that rather than addressing
the affordability crisis,
addressing the immigration problem,
because why is housing so expensive?
You have all these extra people
in the country from the last administration.
Nobody can afford a house because it's supply and demand.
Representatives from both Russia and Ukraine at the White House today,
First Lady Melania Trump,
hosting them after successfully brokering a first-of-its-kind
partial ceasefire between the two countries.
Ukraine saying it now expects more U.S. support
after the midterm elections.
NTD's international correspondent, Ariane Pasdar, reports.
We must use the courage we brought to Oleshky
to find common ground through a shared concern.
For the suffering of innocent people.
First Lady Melania Trump saying Russia
and Ukraine should continue moving closer toward peace.
She's hosting representatives from both countries
at the White House on Thursday,
discussing the positive outcome of a partial ceasefire
in the Russia-controlled Ukrainian city of Oleshky.
The town gained global attention
when its residents became stranded by heavy fighting,
leaving them without food and medicine.
The ceasefire marked the first time since
the start of the war that both sides managed
to adhere to a truce,
allowing for aid to come in and residents to evacuate.
The Russian representative thanking the First Lady for the initiative,
while also praising President Trump's peace efforts.
President Trump has asked President Putin
to support a number of initiatives
on exchanging of prisoners, on releasing US prisoners,
on humanitarian efforts, and President Putin supported those ideas.
The First Lady now says
the two sides should continue building on that momentum.
Together we can create something more enduring than
a temporary ceasefire.
Meanwhile in Europe, Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying Russia
could have created something more enduring a long time ago.
We have just had a humanitarian operation in Oleshky.
And this operation proved something very simple.
When Putin wants the fighting to stop, it stops.
And Ukraine's foreign minister,
suggesting Kyiv expects more US support after the midterm
elections.
We expect new steps to support Ukraine.
USA needs us because our security is indivisible with USA security.
He added that Ukraine needs the leadership
from the U.S. and President Trump.
