Now at noon, tragedy in Brooklyn.
Six people are dead after
the fire tearing through a home in Sunset Park.
We are live on the scene with the latest on this story.
Welcome here to the noon.
I'm Ryan Christopher.
And that very fire erupted around 1 o'clock this morning
and quickly spread next door.
And though firefighters arrived within minutes,
it was too late for six of those victims.
And Fox 5's Antoine Lewis is live from Sunset Park with more.
Antoine, what's the latest here on this story?
Ryan, the tragedy, the evidence of all of which is even more palpable
when you look at what's left
of it right now. Roy is going to give you a look
at what's going on at the house right now. What
you are seeing are fire marshals
who are in the process of examining a bicycle. We do not know
anything other than it is a bike.
We do not know if it's a manually operated one, if there are
batteries involved, but that's what you're looking
at that's happening right now in the threshold of
Again, what remains of the house.
The fire started just after 1:30 this morning.
Flames and...
Heavy smoke pouring from this two-story home
on 58th Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
The blaze reaching three alarm status
and spread to one of the neighboring homes.
More than 200 firefighters responding to the scene
and then quickly determined there were fatalities.
The FDNY says four people died here on scene.
Two others later died at a local hospital.
At least four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The sense of grief on this tragedy not lost
on just the residents of this community,
also on the officials who came here to the scene.
Take a listen.
I would like to ask all of us gathered here today
as well as New Yorkers across our city
to take a moment to pray for the full recovery
for those who are injured and for the families
who have lost their loved ones
and whose lives have been devastated by this morning's fire.
This was a very, very quick response to this building.
Upon arrival, we had fire on every
floor, cellar first and second floor,
fire blowing out every window, meeting us at the front door.
Our units moved in very aggressively getting
a hose line on each one of those floors for a very
very quick knockdown. Among the debris removed
from the house what appears to be a scooter and
a bike. We do not know if they were battery operated or not.
Officials did tell us at least
one lithium-ion battery was recovered from the scene.
No word on whether that played a role
here in what's going on as you come back to us again live.
So these are fire marshals.
During the investigation, this is still unfolding.
The fire took about three hours to control.
But again, right now what's happening, since we've gotten on scene,
they are right now examining what appears to be a bike,
as we understand it, out here in Sunset Park.
And again, we do not know if this is a manually operated one
or if it used batteries or something like that.
But this is all part of the investigation into this tragedy.
And we'll, of course, keep you updated as things develop,
whether it's here or on Newsroom Live again at 2 o'clock.
That's the latest from Brooklyn.
We'll now send it back inside to you, sir.
